I can tell it's going to take me a LONG LONG time to understand all of this stuff. Lenses, shooting formats, tweaks, dirty CCDs, etc. Trying not to get all nervous about the purchase.

My questions:

Storage: do the Ultra cards really to storage more quickly than the non-Ultra (Sandisk)? Trying not to get reeled in by the marketing hype.

Capture 3: Is it working fine for XP users, and where can I buy it?

Thanks for all of the help.

This should answer most or all of your questions. I purchased a Sandisk Ultra only to discover it was a waste of money.

Check it out. It's very informative.

I cannot address you San Disk Question, but I will address the Nikon Capture 3 question.

On many XP machines Capture 3 works fine, however, there have been an increasing number of machines - for whatever reason - where Nikon Capture 3 will not work. For those scenarios the users will load the software, the machine will reboot, and everytime you click on the Capture 3 icon or try to initialize it within Nikon View, they get a an error that says something like, "Initialization Error - the drivers need updating" [or something along those lines. I know, it happened to me and no matter how many times I uninstalled and reinstalled the software, nothing would help. I spent 3 hours one time with Nikon tech support [several levels of it], and they didn't have a clue as to what was wrong.

Then I read a thread about a patch that was posted at this one web site. Seems that a student programmer discovered the error also and created a patch that fixes everything. I managed to download the patch and have it. Anyone having the problem I just described can email me at:

[email protected]

and I will email you that patch [approximately 86 kb]. I was leery at first but when I installed the patch and rebooted the machine, everything functions perfectly now.

Problem is that Nikon found out about it and made whoever had the patch, take it down...but Nikon has done nothing to fix the problem and refuses to believe there is a problem with Capture 3 on some XP machines. This is shameful.

So anyone needing that patch [to take care of that specific problem], or just to be safe for future installations, email me and I'll get it to you.

I will (hopefully) be purchasing the D100 very soon, I've got Win2000, it works fine with Nikon Capture 3...??

Terry,

I am running Win2k with NC3 with no problems.

Terry:

The NC-3 compatibility with both XP and 2000 seems to be a hit or miss scenario. I've had people email me requesting the patch who had Windows 2000 and wound up having the same problem I described. AFter I sent them the patch, the software worked perfectly.

I don't know what to tell you. Right now NC-3 works fine on a large percentage of machines with XP and 2000. However, there have been enough problems reported with that exact error I talked about [on both XP and 2000], that somebody made a patch that fixed the problem.

Some folks emailed me to get the patch just in case they run into this problem.

The problem [if you experience it] could be the result of other software, motherboard issues, etc. Anyway, I'm just happy to have the patch. Before Nikon pulled that patch, the web site it was on received hundreds of hits for that particular patch, so the problem exists.

Right now the problem seems to be confined to certain XP and 2000 machines.

Ben

Ben,

Does the same patch work for both Win2K & XP...?

Thanks,
Terry

This is not entirely true, Ben. I worked with the Nikon tech people on this problem --It affects some Windows 2000 Professional Systems. There were 13 cases in the world where they had a similar problem. Nikon NY took the problem to Japan and two weeks later they emailed a patch to correct the problem. Cap 3 works fine now. If anyone needs the patch I will Email it them.

Apparently so because one guy emailed me to send him the patch - he had Windows 2000. He emailed me back to thanks...that it did the trick.

Again, I was responding to a thread a few weeks ago where a person talked about the problem and listed a web site in which to get the patch.

I immediately downloaded it and then two days later they took the patch off of the web site because Nikon did not want it to be listed. Nikon still refuses to believe there is a problem with NC 3 and certain Windows 2K and XP setups. The big problem is that it's intermittent - one person can have NC 3 work fine on his/her machine while the next person may have that one specific problem I talked about.

Paul:

Thanks for the clarification and the update. My experiences with them - after several hours included everything from their telling me that I had too drive letters [geezzzz], and then ending the conversation with "well, there's nothing we can do at this time." That, needless to say, became very frustrating.

So when I saw the problem listed on the web site and then a reply listed that one patch, I downloaded it.

Could you please send me that patch at: [email protected].

Thanks,

Ben
