This is just one of the reasons for the Metz 58. I just updated mine and it is working flawlessly. Thanks for the info

Anyone know how to install this using Windows 7 or a Mac?

Eric
I installed the 48 AF-1 upgrade via Windows 7 using the instructions for XP. The only difference was that Windows 7 automatically detected the 48 AF-1 so I didn't have to follow the directions to install the driver.
Windows 7 automatically detected your driver? I had to follow this procedure I just wrote for 7. It was sort of a pain so I wrote a blog entry on it:

Let me know what your method was, it sounds easier :)

... worked just fine for me:

1. Upacked the downloaded files.
2. Plug in the flash as directed by the instructions
3. Windows 7 automatically found the drivers online and installed.
4. Ran the red-icon exe as directed.
5. Accepted the agreement, clicked start and DONE!

Thanks, that was a waste of time writing the blog entry then :) Ah well, it happens.

I should set my Windows 7 to look online for the drivers then :)

Gorge:

Thanks so much for the update! I just received my spanking new Metz 58 last night btw! and my initial impressions are that I like it VERY much. I don't find the buttons nor the menu difficult at all to navigate as I had read some people complaining.

Of course, I couldn't wait to fire it up and therefore did not read the manual first but, on my K10 and PTTL - it worked great (auto - not so well, but it could have been me). I do find that I might have to dial it down a bit as someone mentioned but, now that I have read this thread, I will try to figure out how to download the firmware - I have Windows XP - but, I will write if I can't figure it out (I also brought the manual to work today to read through it at break times).

The only thing I found very odd and unusual, almost to the point that I was going to return it was the cable to connect it to the Quantum turbo battery. I tested the flash first with batteries and it was solid and fast. Then I took out my quantum battery and plugged that into the flash - guess what, it wouldn't work. First, the cable doesn't plug snuggly into the flash all the way in. Next observation was that I was getting an error message on the display that was flashing all the time. I tried plugging and unplugging it and different combinations of things but, nothing worked - and everything would come up and work fine without being plugged into the battery. I double checked the box and description and saw that it indeed was the right cable. Called B&H but, they were closed. Just when I was about to give up - it came to life but, you will never guess how!

The flash will work with the Quantum Turbo battery and cable ONLY if you remove the AA batteries from inside the flash and DON'T turn the power switch on. In other words, removed any batteries from inside the flash unit and leave the power switch OFF (error message when turned on). I came by this combination only by accident and found the whole thing rather bizaar but, I can say that it not only works but, works flawlessly - like very well.

Just wanted to write about this to see if it helps someone else or maybe someone has some thoughts on it. I have never seen this combination in a flash with the quantum battery but, that is how it wants to work.

Thanks for the heads-up on the update, I am not to technically inclined so I may have to write back and ask for help on how to do this but, I will read the manual today and try to figure this out for tonight.

See ya,
Suse

The same happened with Vista Home Premium. It took some time, but eventually the automatic search found the suitable drivers.

I think my problem is the auto search was disabled to begin with so I never tried it. (probably however HP decided to configure their PC.)

Drivers installed fine but when I try and hit Start in the firmware updater it thinks about it for a second and then says no device found.

Tried restarting and disabling AV software and even running as administrator but no luck.

Anyone have any ideas

Managed to update it eventually, so for anyone who has the same problem as I did you can try this at your own risk!
I used Vista but this may well have worked in Win7.

Let windows update install the drivers required.
Unplug the flash and replace the batteries (make sure the flash is off).

Plug back into the computer and switch flash on (it doesn't come on so don't worry).
Now try updating by running the updater as described in the instructions.

Remember it might have been unwise to do this with the batteries in but I didn't have any luck trying it the way it was explained in the instructions.

Flash is turned off with batteries removed?

Yes it was - but got it working by doing the exact opposite LOL (see post below yours)

The instructions say to update with batteries removed and Flash off...

I installed my drivers manually. I won't let Windows decide to find them on-line. The drivers are included in the zip file. Plug the flash in and look in your device manager. Install the drivers from there by pointing it at the driver folder, the zip file created when it unzipped..
