I detest Canon

Hopefully post like this will make Canon stand up and pull out everything they have to give us the cameras that will be remembered for generations!

They would be more keen than you in improving their cameras, if only they knew how! They have to sustain a brand/company against the competition whereas you have the option to switch. They dont have an option.

I had a Sony PS camera since more than 3 years and I bought Canon recently; no specific reason. I dont see that great a difference in quality of the photos I took with that old camera and this new Canon, other than the images taken indoor with flash, where Sony gives ugly colours(at least my Sony W30 does) Other than that, I dont see that big a difference, even though the cameras are generations apart. I still love Sony, not that Canon is bad either. You switch to what you like. If you are spending money and there is no satisfaction just because you want to be loyal to a brand, then the purpose of the purchase is wasted.

...and it wouldn't bother me at all if they took the video capabilities right out of the camera and just made it the best still camera possible in that package, for the same price, or, if they kept the still performance the same, they could cut the price down proportionately.

But I suppose too many would scream about that.
There we go with the old "video is eating still performance" fallacy. Compact cameras have had video for how long now, 4-5 years? The R&D for implementing video has been done and paid for long time ago. And since video doesn´t require any dedicated hardware (all that is needed is a simple software to record the live view output), leaving it out would not lower the cost of making a camera one bit. One could as well claim that costs could be saved by leaving out half of the shutter times.

I have an LX3 and like it a lot, but its JPEG's deliver overly pink flesh tones. My beloved (and now eBayed to pay for other things) Canon S400 got flesh right, every time. Canon puts just the right amount of orange into their skin tones which I love. When I shoot my LX3 in RAW I'm able to get attractive flesh tones.

.... most still cameras with video do not allow zooming or focus changes during the course of taking a video, and most still allow only 720p video at best. Those aren't the standards I prefer for a video. It's true that no hardware additions are needed as long as the shutter performance is adequate. Shutter performance (shutter lag times, shot-to-shot times, burst speeds) in compact cameras is abysmal - yet those cameras are being equipped as "Video cameras". I'd much rather have that fast shutter available for much shorter shot-to-shot times for still photos and for "bursts" of stills. I'd rather have the R&D and whatever expense it takes to get 1080p video into a still camera, devoted to improvements in high ISO noise, or to reductions in price. I'm only guessing, but it seems to me that the fact that some sort of video is possible with compact cameras means that the technology is there, to allow better still camera shutter capabilities.

Looking at Panasonic's new lines of pocket digitals, I can only feel sorry for my now favorite brand of digital camera maker. I meant, just take a look at those specs on Panasonic's line, and take a look at Canon's line! Panasonic has wider lenses, neater autofocus and face recognitions, longer zooms, etc etc.
RE: the original post:

Look at some of the side by side comparisons. Most Panasonics look like there is a veil over the lens. By comparison images often lack detail and cannot be cropped well.

Plus ultra WA is not always the best. The new line starts at 24/25mm and f/3.3. 25mm wide makes for a funky portrait. Once you zoom to 35mm you're down to f/3.5. Most any Canon is now a full stop faster! PLUS with Canon you don't have to zoom in on every shot.

Yes I wish Canon had more 28-140+ options, a faster burst rate, and that darn flash didn't pop up on the SX200 so I could buy one!

IMO Canon = people pictures. Panasonic = landscapes. Pick according to your usage. I've owned several and have given up on Panasonic to stick with Canon.

After my bitterness gone down somewhat due to S90 cool lowlight pictures, I realized that NO S90 in Indonesia. None. When everyone else out there has their paws on the little wonder of 2009, Canon keep Indonesians from grabbing one.

Even G11 and 7D is out of stock and my favorite camera store is promoting THAT OTHER compact from THAT OTHER BRAND as NEW ITEM!

Gaaaargh!

Canon, show us some love, will ya?

Look at that announcements. How come does Canon hope to have prominence when what they offer are things that belong to two or three years ago! Stupid zoom range, no HD video, propietary batteries.

Look at Sony's offers: wide angle, EXMOR sensor, in-camera HDR, in-camera Panoramic stitches!

Canons inventors and designers are thinking in similar way. But world is changing. I think that soon we'll see professionals with Panasonic.

You are free to buy whichever new camera that you think is offering the best for your use. It doesn't have to be made by Canon.

Sadness, simply sadness. When you use Canon for years and now you can see that many brands are better so you want to share your opinion in hope that Canon will hear and change something.

OK, if you married Canon, the company, like you marry your wife (or husband). Hope you didn't get that comitted. You have no lifetime obligations to Canon. If they don't shape up, tell them to ship out.

Don't worry, relax :). Even married man has some secrets. I can unveil one - I've just bought TZ7 (ZS3). But more than 3 kg. Canon lenses and DSLR camera remind me than I'm still married. So life isn't so simple as you think.

Yes, I blame Canon for not making a large format and pocket camera combined with movie facilities, full size chip underwater large grip, and tiny slip in pocket with Ti case. I'm asking you to go rafting too...
