I have heard a number of complaints about having to use the rec / playback switch to review an image. This can easily be done by assigning "review" in the menu to the down function button. Then just a light touch on the shutter release to return to record mode.

With regard to not having a retractable lens cap, I find no inconvenience in removing the cap and it really doesn't take much to get used to it. The benefits of 24mm F2.0-2.8 far outweigh a minor issue such as this. I would imagine the size of the LX3 would be compromised if it had a retractable lens cap.

Regards
Steve

Yes, the first thing I did out of the box was to set Review to the Fn button. saves wear and tear on the slide switch and is quick and easy to use. Also the review zoom is limited to a way more realistic 8x for evaluation purposes.

Ditto in spades, a proper lens cap offers lens protection. Those flimsy leafy lens cover things are no protection at all if bumped or prodded. I think every camera I've had with those things has given trouble despite the extreme care that I take with cameras. Commonly a hair or dust gets caught in them and they won't shut or won't open properly. Plus now and then they just decide to get tangled up and needs some careful poking with a toothpick to sort them out.

Way, way, way better to have a real lens cap.

Also by setting review to the fn button, you will always be in record mode when the camera is turned on.

I have had two Canon cameras where the retractable lens cap failed, one where the camera took a small knock and another after a visit to the beach and the camera was dropped in dry sand.

Being a control freak, I also am one who likes the lens cap. I've only had one camera with auto lens retract, that was the original Canon Elph, APS film camera.

I can't think of a better use for the Fn button then for reviewing recorded photos.

After taking a picture of someone they normally want to hold the camera and put their greasy fingers all over the lens, and then pass it to someone else who was in the picture so they can hold the camera (by the lens) and a cigarette in their greasy hands, sometimes that person wants to pass the camera to someone else, who wasn't even in the photo, with a cigarette hanging out of their mouth and a pint in their hand so that they can balance the camera (by the lens) in their remaining greasy hand whilst dripping fag ash all over it.

In such potential situations I switch off the camera, put the lens cover on and put it in play mode before handing it over for pass the parcel.

Really? I like also the review --> Fn button, but I also like having it assigned to switch between the different metering modes, for example when I need to go quickly to Spot metering. I have my review mode set to "hold", so that after taking the picture it stays on the screen until I press gently the shutter. That way, it's almost like going into playback mode and I can still have the Fn --> Metering.

Of course there is also the auto review option in the settings menu. Shame there isn't an easy delete when auto reviewing.
