Command dial problem in CP 5700

I've had my CP 5700 for just under a month and am generally quite pleased. I am having a problem in both apeture and shutter priority modes. I occassionally find the command dial fails to respond, even with multiple turns of the dial in either direction. I called Nikon tech support and the first thing they asked me was what CF card I was using. I am using a RiData 20X 512MB CF card. They stated only Lexar and Sandisk cards up to 192MB are supported. They suggested I try one of these cards. I had a Sandisk 128MB card and had no problems yet when I used it. This is one area that Phil completely missed in his review (as did others who have reviewed this camera). In fact the manual states support only up to 128MB for Sandisk and 160mb for Lexar. (page 159). Anyone else note similar problems?

I'm using a 256mb 25x Transend card and have not encountered any problems.

I have the same problem. It seems the command dial does not respond as it should. I am using 128MB Sandisk, but it doesn't make sense to me that the CF card should be related. Sounds like they (Nikon) used that as an excuse to explain the problem.

I think all the 5700 cameras have this problem. I have learned to live with it. I just spin the dial a little more. But maybe the dial is badly designed or has bad contacts, or it may be software related. But I am sure it has nothing at all to do with the type of CF card.

Do you have this problem maybe afteryou used the 'quick review button' ?

When you do so, just push the shutter release buutton half the way and the problem doesn't exist anymore.

I agree with Julius, it seems very unlikely that it's CF card related and it would be a shame to shell out $ to buy another 'compatible' card in hopes of relieving it. Mine does the same thing, it's annoying, but I just spin it more too.

Thanks. I am happy to see I am not the only person who has noted this problem even though it is a hassle. I agree that the CF card shouldn't make any difference unless there is some kind of electronic signature (in the CF card)interpreted by the CP 5700 that interferes. I will try to pay more attention and see if this happens after quick review. I would rather not send the unit back for repair.

I am using the original Cf 32MB card that came with the camera and the same thing happens to my 5700. I think that the Nikon chap that you spoke to didn't want to deal with the problem. I also have ordered the Ridata card 512MB, the 160MB card the Nikon support is no where big enough for a good days shooting and if they was to admit to a problem with anything over this size of card I personaly would feel cheated in paying the sort of money that I payed for the camera...that aside I am quite happy with the results but there is always room for improvement (poor light focus assist would be nice).
