Went to monument valley but it was very cloudy and bleak and the colors were very dull even at sunset and sunrise. Tried to make the most of the situation with this back lit shot.

What could have been done better? Anything that I ought to do with software? I have shots with longer and shorter exposure.

when you shoot snow like that, you really have to add a 1.5 approx stops. the image is quite underexposed. I spent a few minutes w/ it in Camera Raw, then into PS LAB mode to remove the overall blue cast and liven everything up.

Thanks for feedback. This one has one stop more light. Indeed the snow looks better, but the sun doesn't look as dramatic...

Would you care to share the processed photo? Thanks a bunch.

It's way too flat.

Try combining a few exposures -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 into an HDR image.

I haven't tried it yet, only read about it.

Time for the search thing again.

I added a simple vertical gradient mask to the two JPGs given to blend them together:

It's pretty much what the scene would have looked like if you had used a GND filter at capture time. I also used a little bit of Topaz Adjust to bring out some detail.

how about this?

I concentrated on getting the snow and valley scene w/o dealing w/ making the sky 'dramatic'. in reality, a good chunk of the sky is pegged at 255 so there is nothing to work with.

it all depends on the look and style you want, you can take the processing in a number of directions.

Thanks all for advice and shared photos! Very helpful. Wampy please do explain what you did!

Hi,

This is a nice image - but as has been said already - the amount of reflection from the snow has caused a degree of underexposure. I took your original and ran it through DCE Tools to give it a bit of HDR. Here's the result.

Hope you like it !!
