Hi there,

This morning got a ring ... my Mark IV arrived. I picked is up, charged it and used it. My first impressions are more than okay ... flabbergasted shooting in the dark without a flashgun ! AF is working superb at low light conditions. I'll post some RAW stuff on my image-bank within a couple of hours. Tomorrow I'll ask my boys to run towards me wearing white T-shirts to see how the auto focus is going.

What a Christmas gift .....

Congrats on the new camera!

By all means, please post some ISO 100 high contrast raw images with some deep shadows!

Please see page 100 of the 1D Mark IV manual before photographing your kids running towards you in plain white T-shirts.

Pay particular attention too “Subjects difficult to focus” especially, if you plan on focusing on the plain white T-shirts.

Hope this helps.

I am out to take the perfect picture, if it exits! :)

Hi,

As promised I took some shots with the Mark IV. Due to bad wether in The Netherlands I didn't have the opportunity to shot a lot.

I shot in JPEG and did not adjust the files at all ! I also shot RAW, but I can't load those on my Smugmug environment. You can watch the files in the gallery, choose for Slideshow or download them. Files are not compressed.

This MarkIV feels very good. It handles more than okay and AF is super. I adjusted the C.Fn III settings to:
1=2
2=*
3=0
4=1
5=1
6=0
7=0
8=2
9=0
10=1
11=2
12=0
13=0
14=0
15=0
16=1
17=0
18=-
19=-

High ISO is much better in comparison with the Mark III, but Nikon does a better job in the very high values I guess. But ..... I'm Canon fan, IQ is better than MIII (especially in high ISO values), I like the crop factor, it's extremely fast with AF, build quality is great, ease of use of the menu system, the Canon lenses are fast and I wanted a fast camera to shoot sports with good ISO results in the 3200 - 5000 range. The camera does a great job working with those large amounts of data. I tested also the video capabilities briefly. Canon delivered what they wrote and promised in the brochure about video is my first impression.

So, I like this Mark IV baby a lot and I will go for an extra body as soon as the store opens on Monday. I have to wait some time .... before delivery takes place .... I think....

I made crops from the running boy serie from photos by Rob Jelsma, it will be probably gone soon due to bandwidth limit.

It seems flawed because of quite long time for this (1/400 or 1/500). I see a couple of clearly OOF shots, but the most is not sharp because of too long times, I think.

All,

I think it's more efficient that all the Nikon "adepts" and 'lovers' stay in their own environment. It's fine that Nikon is a winner in the really high ISO's, but as we all know a camera is more than a ISO tooling box. I went for Canon and not wasting my time on the Nikon forums ... looking in other brands shows regret .... I guess.

When I can shoot 10fps @ ISO 5000 at sport events it's more than enough for me. Video is great and AF is better than even before.

From a technological point of view Canon created something very nice in a 1.3 crop-factor scene. On the video part it's clear that Nikon hasn't got a lot history in this arena.

I saw this forum as a useful resource for help and guidance. I see a trend of more and more negativism and sarcasm in the dpreview forums which is like a melancholic depression pushing the usefulness and togetherness away .....

I wish you all (Canon and Nikon fanatics) a great New Year's Eve and a super 2010 !

not really a "brand" fanatic. I utilize many camera systems. Like many photographers, I care more about the image and the art than the camera or make. even for some shots, I may just resort to using a point and shoot for the sake that, knowing how to use a camera, can wield "good enough" results.

Although i primarily shoot in daylight anyway, I very rarely use any ISO higher than 2000. Is it nice that the d3s CAN take great images at super high ISO's?...sure, and while I was really looking hard at the mark IV, I just wish they had just gone with a full framer. and while going by these particular images shown do not really show much.....what is shown....just doesn't seem up to Canon's imaging standards.

Happy shooting all and have a happy New Year! Stay safe and more importantly...tell your friends and family, you love them.

I agree with your comments about the forum. And, I thank you for your efforts at posting images. I don't expect that you have revealed the final "truth" about any functions of the camera any more than will many others to come. It will take many more such contributions and many different professional reviews to get a clear picture of the precise capabilities of the 1D4. However, I have already begun to gather an overall positive impression.

As to the pure Nikon trolls, the insecure former Canon owners looking to justify or rue their recent purchase decisions to themeselves, and the several bitter, somewhat obsessed Mark III "bangers" whose life missions seem to be inhabiting these forums and making sure they get the very last word on all matters MarkIII, no matter how many posts it takes, well, I'm just waiting for them to arrive en mass. Yes, it would be a much better forum without such tomfoolery. But, that is the price of freedom; to get the chance to express ourselves as we like, we must sometimes bare the burden of hearing from those whose opinions sometimes seem wildly inappropriate.

Anyways, I toast to a happy, healthy and propserous New Year to each and every one of you out there in the digital ether.

Regards,
David
