Never would I do such a thing.
The blades of the built-in cap are far too flimsy and weak , they'd risk getting damaged quite easily. That would in turn either bring damage to the lens frontal element proper or at the very least cause dust and lint to go into the lens, even inside the lens at the worst case.
Besides the above, keeping it "directly into your pocket" would provide no protection against occasional knocks, would risk the camera falling out of the pocket if leaning or making other brisk movements, and in hot climates it will surely risk getting the camera soaked in your own sweat with the obvious consequences.
On second thought....
Have to disagree. With experience on my side .
I carried my TZ-1 for over a year in my pocket, in a cheap plastic sandwich bag. Still looks and functions perfectly as new in all respects.
"
But, wait, you say: the TZ-1 has a lens cap !!"
Then I got a TZ-5 and have carried
IT in my pocket, in a bag, for a year - still looks & functions perfectly, in all respects.
I
DID train myself to move my car keys from my right pocket to the left so the camera could have the right pocket & not get bumped by the car door (USA).
I did reverse that to the left pocket for 6 weeks in Australia.
And that's not all! even if the fragile blades should get messed up, a drop of glue on each & a little curved "bow" of semi-stiff plastic to hold them wide open until the glue dries, and a "Kaiser" push-on lenscap from BH Photo & you are still good to go! I originally bought an "as-is" TZ3 & did this & just bought another TZ5 "as is" & did this so my wife can have a TZ5, too.
A case in your pocket lends far too much bulk & on a belt, just gets in the way all the time. Keep the LCD against your leg & the solid metal bezel takes care of the lens.
You don't even need a Ziploc bag, except in heavy rain, the
Cheap sandwich bag does just fine. My camera is in my pocket
always - even now, as I sit in front of the computer.
