Anyone put your ZS3 directly into your pocket?

Or do you put it into a case first, then put the case in your pocket or on your belt?

I'm trying to figure out the best way to carry mine with me on a regular basis. Seems like just slipping it into a pocket would be the easiest access, but I'm not sure if it's such a smart idea. ;)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Women have handbags, so don't need to put them in pockets :)

I keep mine in a little sunglasses case I bought from a local "$2 Shop". It's made of a neoprene (wetsuit) type of fabric, zips up, is dust-free, a little loose but lightly padded and works a treat. And much cheaper than any other option I've seen!

I slip mine into a small zip lock bag, then slip that into my pocket. Very light, simple and cheap. Provides protection from water, dirt, dust and lint. Does not provide protection from knocks, but I have never found that to be an issue.

I keep mine in a plastic sandwich bag (not the ziplock kind) and that inside the Panasonic leather case that came with my ZS3 in the Costco "kit." And then I carry that inside the fanny pack I usually wear which also has the LX3 attached to the belt of the fanny pack in another case (Tamrac 5961 which is a nice snug fit for the LX3 but would also be an OK but slightly loose fit for the ZS3).

If you don't get the Costco/Panasonic leather case, there are several good inexpensive cases that can either be packed inside another larger backpack or fanny pack or worn on a belt. The Tamrac 5961 (or one size smaller) or the Lowepro Rezo 30 (especially the Lowepro considering the current price: http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-3439010-Rezo-30-Black/dp/B00012FVYC ) would be good choices.

I keep mine in a Lowepro neoprene velcro pouch attached to the belt - quick enough access for most of the shooting I do - and ocasionally in a coat pocket. It is too big to fit confortably in a jeans pocket, at least for me. Also I tend to carry a lot of other stuff in my pockets, most of which would easily scratch the camera or worse.

Never would I do such a thing.

The blades of the built-in cap are far too flimsy and weak , they'd risk getting damaged quite easily. That would in turn either bring damage to the lens frontal element proper or at the very least cause dust and lint to go into the lens, even inside the lens at the worst case.

Besides the above, keeping it "directly into your pocket" would provide no protection against occasional knocks, would risk the camera falling out of the pocket if leaning or making other brisk movements, and in hot climates it will surely risk getting the camera soaked in your own sweat with the obvious consequences.

A good case prevents all the above and can be comfortably carried attached to your belt and ready for action at a moment's notice.

Just my two euro cents.

Good ideas... thanks. I've got a Rezo 30 that was just delivered. I'm not all that comfortable with it on my belt, though -- I'd prefer it in my cargo-shorts pocket (although the Rezo 30 seems just a tad bulky for a pocket due to the front flap).

Maybe I'll use a little sandwich bag for keeping the ZS3 in my pocket, and also try to get used to the Rezo 30 on my belt.

Hi

Recently spent 5 weeks travelling around Japan, trains, buses and hitch hiking. I had my TZ7 in my shirt pocket all the time and forever pulling it out to take a photo or shoot some video.

I would face the lens are into my body for a little protection. Had the wrist strap attached my shirt via a clip in case of a drop. Also had a small tripod permanently fitted and angled flat with the bottom of the camera and to one side and used this mainly to hold the camera, hard to explain but it worked. And nothing else in that pocket which could be zipped closed.

I took 1600 photos in 5 weeks which to me sounds like too few but also shoot a lot of video so in reality you are pulling the camera out endless times most days and the convenience of it being ready to go in your top pocket is great.

Have to disagree. With experience on my side .

I carried my TZ-1 for over a year in my pocket, in a cheap plastic sandwich bag. Still looks and functions perfectly as new in all respects.

" But, wait, you say: the TZ-1 has a lens cap !!"

Then I got a TZ-5 and have carried IT in my pocket, in a bag, for a year - still looks & functions perfectly, in all respects.

I DID train myself to move my car keys from my right pocket to the left so the camera could have the right pocket & not get bumped by the car door (USA).

I did reverse that to the left pocket for 6 weeks in Australia. ;)

And that's not all! even if the fragile blades should get messed up, a drop of glue on each & a little curved "bow" of semi-stiff plastic to hold them wide open until the glue dries, and a "Kaiser" push-on lenscap from BH Photo & you are still good to go! I originally bought an "as-is" TZ3 & did this & just bought another TZ5 "as is" & did this so my wife can have a TZ5, too.

A case in your pocket lends far too much bulk & on a belt, just gets in the way all the time. Keep the LCD against your leg & the solid metal bezel takes care of the lens.

You don't even need a Ziploc bag, except in heavy rain, the Cheap sandwich bag does just fine. My camera is in my pocket always - even now, as I sit in front of the computer.

Ordered the Kata DP413 for mine. I don't think I would have purchased the ZS3 if I wanted to keep a camera in my pocket -- It annoys me to have even a bulky key chain in my pocket much less a ZS3. Then again even the smallest of cameras I probably wouldn't keep in my pocket.

I am concerned about dropping the camera though. I'm glad I use the wrist strap because it would have already hit the floor twice if not! Wish I could find a better wrist strap or a safety mechanism that would keep the camera attached to my camera bag or belt or something.

I've had a TZ3 & a TZ5. I've carried both in my pocket over a 3 yr period, with no problems. The TZ5 has also travelled Australia with my 19yr old headcase daughter and everything functions well. Multiple packaging is a nuisance and a hindrance and I've decided not to bother - it's for using and the less packaging the more it gets used

Like Big Daddy P, I keep mine in a pouch (acrylic?) that came with a pair of sunglasses. The wrist strap for the camera is tied to one of the pouch drawstrings, so the pouch hangs from the camera when the camera's in use. Now, with the weather cold, the camera-in-pouch usually rides in the pocket of a fleece or a jacket. And because the pouch adds no bulk, it's not bad having it in a trouser's pocket, as I did at a Christmas party -- sometimes. Will probably get a clip-on-the-belt case in May or June or maybe the waterproof shell, since we canoe.

Trensamiro -

No disrespect, you DO have a distinctive style - and great insights, and great photo examples!

Thanks for your kind words, Erik, and don't worry, I didn't feel disrespected in the least, matter of fact it made me smile ... :-)

Have a nice & happy New Year 2010 ! ... :-D

For some it might work but not for me. I carry my TZ6 in a Lumix case on my belt. It's well protected and easy to get out as the case is designed for this. Carrying it in a pocket risks the lens blades being damaged, dust ingress and the lcd getting scratched and damaged. I also find it too bulky unless you put it into a cargo pants pocket further down. It's easier to get it out of a belt case quickly than a pocket, especially if you are sitting down. Mine lives in its case unless I'm using it so it's never going to get damaged by being knocked about. YMMV.

I keep TZ5 in lightweight Hama case - just fits with spare card. Case is lightly padded with woven exterior that slides easily in/out of jacket pocket (have a neoprene case of similar size but because of friction it is not as quick to slip in/out of pocket). Also I try always to wear a tee-shirt with a chest pocket and after first use of camera just keep it in the shirt pocket on a neck strap - so it is secure but available for immediate use. If no shirt pocket then I just hang it on the neck strap (the lightweight type - a longer version of the wrist strap) and leave under jacket/fleece.

My ZS3 is routinely carried in my shirt pocket with no straps or "case".

My everyday shirts and fishing shirts short and long sleeved have large shirt pockets that are closed with velcro.
