Can anyone help with a list of compatible gps devices that will work for geotagging in the xD range?

I've tried to tether a 1DMkIII to a Garmin Nuvi 710, but comes up with "incompatible device"

Since the Nuvi range don't really do breadcrumb trails or track logs, I'm guessing that this will not work?

It's a great little device the size of a matchbook, great battery life and memory, and bluetooth capable which allows for wireless track downloads.

Price is right as well...under $100

Looks nice! Have you tested this device with one of the Canon WFT's?

I use the wintec as a stand alone device to tag all my photos so I can't report on compatibility with the wft. I contemplated getting the wft primarily for tagging but the wintec solution was much cheaper and more convenient for me.

You might want to look at the etrex HCx if you're doing backcountry hiking. I have this device and can report it has no trouble in deep foilage unlike some of the other garmins I have which lose signal in the woods. It's also pretty small so you can clip it to your belt or backpack. The wintec has a very sensitive receiver and I've not had a problem with it losing reception in foilage.

In terms of compatible devices...I came across this

The Canon WFT-E3’s USB port can alternatively be used to connect a compatible GPS device, allowing you to record the universal time, elevation and co-ordinates into the headers of image files. Compatible is the key word here, with Canon stating “the transmitter can be used with Garmin GPSmap or eTrex series, or Magellan eXplorist GPS devices that produced data in the format NMEA 0183 Version 2.0.1, as well as some devices that produce Garmin protocol data”.

A Canon representative told us the only specific products that are tested as compatible are the Garmin eTrex Legend C and Vista C models using the Garmin protocol plus the Magellan eXplorist 400 and 200 using the NMEA protocol. We tried an eTrex Vista C without success, but had no problems with a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. We’d suggest trying before you buy if it’s an important feature to you.

Thanks for the info. I have tried several GPS units in the shops with the correct protocol, but only the Garmin Street Pilot (€50) connected to the WFT. But, this unit had problems to connect to the satellites, so it was not usable.

The "Wintec WBT-201" seems very small and your description is interesting, so I ordered one (only $92 at Amazon). If it works with the WFT, I'll try to remember to add the information to this thread. If it's not compatible, I just use it as a standalone device.

Simple answer is: Garmin GPSmap 60CSx, and we use the RoboGeo software which is very user friendly..

The trick, "not so tricky" actually, is to make sure your camera clock is SET to the Time shown on your GPS device when you begin your shootin;

The DATE in the file headder as the pictures are taken are used by the ROBOGep software; After the days shooting, all the JPEG files, are each compared to the date stamp in the GPS track-file... Set this track file to 10 or 15 seconds for precise tracking; the device can deliver up to 10,000 track points.

When there is a match, or between time/date values, the GPS coordinates are computed and inserted into the Picture file's headder, in a standard location, so Google Maps will read and spot each/any/many image onto typical mapping software, inlcuding SmugMug's engine....

I knew they lagged behind in Flash technology, but geez louise. Not to brag but I can't imagine taking landscape without my Nikon GP-1. Tiny little thing attaches to my strap and tags every photo with location, altitude and GMT time.

But ok, I'm in the wrong forum anyway so I'll keep my voice down.

As a loyal Canonian, I couldn't agree with you more - this is pathetic!

...Hi!

I don't think Vufndr will reply here since, it seems, his last post is from 3 months ago but maybe you, being also interested in the subject, can help me.

How do you think he went on using the Wintec WBT-201 as a stand alone geotagging device?

From his post. "...I use the wintec as a stand alone device to tag all my photos so I can't report on compatibility with the wft." .

What do you think he meant with that?

Canon photographers are smart enough to actually know where they are when they take a photo. Clueless owners of other manufacturers' cameras need a technology aid to tell them "You are HERE."

I think this is no different than the other solutions where you have to sync via software.
