Why do SLRs not have viewfinder playback?

not sure if I am saying it right, but am somewhat new to the SLR world, have a Canon 40D, and one of the things I have trouble with is playing back my photos on the screen outside, and sometimes inside. I find them very hard to view. When I had the s2is i liked the fact I could put my eye to the viewfinder zoom in and view my photo, make sure everything is right. Are SLRs just not capable of this? I would just find something like this really helpful.

the viewfinder is not a LCD screen

I understand its an optical viewfinder, I guess I just do not get, why are they not able to turn it into a digital lcd screen that is a viewfinder aswell while showing the exact image your going to take. I would think with all the technology they are adding to these cameras this is something that we have figured out.

Because that would suck.

The advantage of an optical, through the lens viewfinder is that you can focus really well with it.

It would no longer be an SLR if they did. Panasonic makes just what you want i believe and the Canon S5 or what ever has taken its place offers what you want. But it's hard to use compared to optical.
