upgrade 30D to 5DmkII

i'm considering to sell my 30D + tamron 17-50 2.8 and an option is to buy a 5DmkII.
I also have a 70-200 F4IS and 1.4TCII.

Some kits with the 5DmkII come with the 24-105F4IS lens. Great lens but then I have some double range. At 24 it seems to have a lot of vingnetting so I consider an UW lens. Would that a good idea?

If yes, what UW lens would be great to buy? The 17-40 also seems to have a lot of vignetting at 17mm. Is that a problem?

What about alternatives from Sigma or Tokina? Any one using one of them on the 5DmkII?

Given the huge difference in price the 17-40 is agood choice

I have got one with my 5D2 and it give very good results provided you stop down to f 8 or f 11 which is not a problem with the 5D2 where you can use ISO up to 3200 with excellenr results

Any UW lens with FF camera are prone to vignettinf ans a relative loss of sharpness in borders and corners when wide open.

I'm very pleased with the 17-40mm although it's clear that it is the weakest among my excellent lenses ( Sigma 24-70, canon L IS 70-200mm, Canon L IS 100-400mm, Canon 100mm macro 2.8 L hybrid IS)

So really it's a matter about how useful this UW will be for you

I don't use so often and with me this lens comes as an heritage from the cropped sensor period where I mainly used it with my 40D and the 450D. It's most useful for me in town for architecture and for shooting big groups of persons in small areas.

Don't you use it for landscape's?

Nothing wrong with some overlap, the 24-105 is a very good lens, I would rather some overlap myself, 16-35 II or 17-40, I have had both and prefer the 16-35 II, your 70-200 f4 IS will really shine on the 5D MkII.

I say the 24-105 will be a GREAT way to get the 5D2 KIT...
that is a very good lens ...and all round problem solver...

16-35 or 17-40 ...your choice for UWA

if I had to pick the lens AFTER 70-200, 24-105...
I would choose 35L FIRST...
then a really wide lens...later...

one thing to really enjoy on your first 'lap' is the great low noise ability..
like with a 35L.... in a living room, nightclub etc

if I had to do again I would stretch for 14mm f2.8 over the 16-35II

so a full KIT ... IMO
14mm, 35mm (later 100Lmacro or 135L) and 24-105, 70-200 f4 I.S.(w/1.4xTC)
3 great fast primes and 2 great zooms

I may sell my 16-35 for the 14mm....rented it for a test run... moderate IQ increase and 2mm is a lot wider...small little lens too

bottom line: 24-105... for sure

you'll love it.... such a dramatic upgrade

I would suggest you go for the 5DII kit including 24-105 lens which means you will get the lens at a good discount compared to buying it later.

I did this, and have not regretted it. The 24-105 is an excellent lens and is wide enough for most purposes on a full frame camera. It is also versatile enough that you can use it as a single walkaround lens with the 5DII when you want to travel light. I have even found that it works quite well with the Kenko 1.4TC - though it is not compatible with the Canon TC.

I had the 17-40 but was not happy with it on FF, even though it had been my favourite lens on my previous crop cameras - edges were poor. From the research I did I found that the 16-35 is not hugely better unless you need the f/2.8.

However, having been satisfied with 24mm for most purposes I decided to try the Sigma 12-24 for when I wanted really wide shots - after an initial repair by Sigma due to a soft left side, I am now very happy with this lens and it gets shots which are just not possible with anything else (at reasonable cost) on Canon FF.

i don't use it so much in landscape photography where for me 24mm (Sigma 2.8 24-70mm) is fine, unless there is a wide interesting foreground

At the end of the day each photographer has to find his own way regarding what is for him "the best focal lengths"

Anyway, the 5D2 in landscape photography realy shines (with a very good lens) restoring " the 3rd dimension" and giving very crisp shots

The foliage rendition especially is astonishing compared with the best cropped sensor cameras.

For the 5D Mk II, I too enjoy landscapes and opted for the Canon F4 landscape trio (17-40, 24-105IS, 70-200F4IS) and picked up the EF 100-400IS for good measure.

BTW, I got the 5D Mk II kit w/24-105 and saved at least $250-$300 over buying each separate.

My suggestion is to go with the 24-105 and get a feel for how wide 24 is on a FF. If 17 is wide enough for you on a crop, you may be content with 24 on the wide end. I went from a 30D to a 5D2 with a 1D2n along the way. I was suprised at how wide 24 was on a FF, the 24-70 2.8 in my case.

I bought the 17-40 for the 1D and it is fine on the5d2. I mostly use it stopped down for landscapes. If I was writing on a clean slate I would consider the sigma 12-24. I have seen some excellent shots with that on a 5D2. I still might, but I live in a remote area and haven't felt like dealing with the potential hassle of getting a good copy.

I'll second the recommendation of trying out the 24-105 first, before picking up a UWA as it might very well be wide enough for your needs.

I had a 17-40L & 40D before moving up to the 5D Mk II and there really is a noticeable difference between 17mm on a crop camera (27.2mm) and a true 24mm on a FF.

Starting over again, I still would have picked up the 17-40 (after picking up a couple of longer lenses), as it provides really nice overlap with the 24-105.

I really have never noticed any vignetting issues on my 17-40L copy on the 5D Mk II.

The 70-200 f4 L IS is awesome.... i often use it with my Kenko 1.4x extender to save weight and not carrying the 100-400mm Even with the extender the sharpness is excellent at f 8

I mainly use the 100-400mm at 400mm for wildlife and the 17-40mm in town

The 5D2 is a great landscape camera giving very crisp photos

UW lens i would consider the 16-35, despite the range limitations it's a great lens. If you would like to have more range i would really consider a normal WA like the 24-70 2.8. It's one of the best WA zooms canon has. And remember a FF like the 5d2 gives you more reach than a APS-C anyway. I switched from the 50d to the 5d2 and i simply love the camera. All my F4 lenses like the 70-200 and 500 give me a shallower DOF than i had with my 50d and make me smile like a little kid again. It feels like i got all new lenses

Due to the prices it's a tricky descision also because it's just a hobby and I don't need it professionaly. The 7D is also tempting but only 500 euro less then a 5DmkII and I think both will be a major step up from my old (but still nice) 30D

IMHO the step that is really worth is from 30D to 5D2
The 7D is still a cropped sensor

you will see what is IQ in standard comparable conditions

For me from cropped to FF sensor it's night ans day with a huge ability tp crop with the 5D (although the 7D is probably with the Nikon D300S the best of the art for cropped sensor DSLRs

baobob is right, the IQ on the 5d is simply superior to the 7d, taken the 5d has an advantage of 4mp. That does not mean i don't use the 50d anymore. It's still nice to have the extra crop when photographing wildlife that's either small or at a large distance.
