Should I exchange my d300s

I just receive my D300s from amazon. When I open the box and look for the manual, the plastic where all the manual, warranty, CD and etc were ripped on the bottom. Also when I look at the camera, the plastic that cover the LCD cover does not stick to the LCD cover. I am beginning to wonder if my D300s is really brand new or if it a camera that has been returned. Other than that, everything looks new. Should I call amazon and have them send another one?

I got a new D300S last week from another place and the bag that has the manual and stuff was "open" too. I've heard several people say that the bag can break open during shipping. When you first turn on the camera, if you have to set the clock, then it's definitely new. If everything appears new, why would you want to go through the hassle of exchanging it?

I've been on Dpreview since June 2006. Unfortunately, some posting history has been lost along the way...

My bag was open too but everything else looked untouched and factory fresh. As I think of it now the D90 (returned it for a D300s) I got the week before, the manual bag was also unsealed so I think it is a non issue as both my cameras were untouched.

Use Opanda to check how many shutter clicks and you'll know whether it's been used or not.

I got mine from the shelf where it was on display, but using Opanda iExif i found it only had 4 clicks on it which is about the same as you'd find from a factory tested new unit, with the added benefit that i didn't have to set the clock and all the tedious hunting down D-lighting and deactivating it had already been done for me :)

There is no such thing as a "factory tested new unit". Shutter activations should be ZERO when received.

uhhhhhhh

NO!!!!!

At least not with all Manufacturers.

Every Pentax DSLR camera comes with 200-400 shutter actuation already on it before it leaves the factory. Nikon probably just have a hard reset. Lieca also hand test every RF camera they sell.

The first photo you take with a new Nikon camera will show a shutter count of "1" in the EXIF. Don't know if Nikon has a "hard reset" or has other ways of doing this, but if your Nikon DSLR has a count other than "1" on the first photo, someone else has used it.

Note that this is the shutter count as stored in EXIF, and of course assumes that the first photo you take is a regular photo. I believe that white balance preset also counts as a shutter activation, and things like life view may also impact this.

What is the shutter actuations count in the Exif data of the very first shot you took with that D300s?
If it isn't 1 (one), then that D300s is definitely not new.

If you paid for new , then you should expect to get new!

This is amazing!

I hope you realize that your camera was not new when you got it, and that someone else had already fiddled with it before you.

The factory does not take a couple of shots just for fun and adjust the clock!

Surely the price you paid was the price of a second hand camera, wasn't it?

The camera that I received is definitely not brand new. It already has 386 clicks on it and the viewfinder is not very clean. When I take a picture the file start DSC_2497 instead of 001. I called amazon and they are going to send me a replacement.

I got 2 D300s...

First came with DCS...020 and the other came with DCS...071
files name on the first shot... Got them brand new from reputable
Nikon dealers...

BUT

When I look at the exif, both first shot were actuation 000001

Now if you got a dirty camera, just return it... not acceptable !
I want to be the first to play with MY $1600 body for sure...
Good luck !

Phil.

In my original post i did mention it was the chaps in the shop who ajusted the clock, but i see what you mean. I'm not sure of the second hand value of a 300s with only 4 clicks on it but i can tell you what i paid: RRP was £1500, in shop at £1249, traded in some old equiptment which drove it down to £849, and then with the voucher i got for buying the 300s body got the 70mm-300mm VR RRP about £500 down to about £300, so all in all i don't feel i had a bad day on the highstreet.

If you could give me a reliable idea of what a second hand 300s with only 4 clicks +70mm-300mm VR is worth then i'd be more than happy to go back and have a word with them if it turns out to be less than what i paid, as the shop and the friendly people within are only ten minutes walk from me and i visit most days i can just to have a look in the second hand lenses cabnet.

As I said in my OP, I get a used D300s instead of brand new. Then I call Amazon and they send me a replacement next day. The replacement I received is definitely brand new since it ask for the language and date/time the first time I turn it on. When I check the EXIF on my first image, the shutter count show as 1. Yippeee

However I found that when I look at the viewfinder, I saw a speck of dust or something that looks like very small black dot on the bottom middle of the focusing screen. I tried to use the blower but it does not move. It does not affect anything just an annoyance. The first one I got also has this in the viewfinder but bigger. Did you get your D300s with a clean viewfinder? I think that nikon need to do better QC.

A reliable price? Ask someone at a second hand camera shop.

If the camera you bought was sold to you as brand new and you did in fact pay the price of a brand new camera, then you paid indeed too much for a second hand camera.

The fact here remains that the camera was used and fiddled with before you did.

Personally, I would find that unacceptable, but if you're happy with this situation, then so be it.

Thank you for your acceptance of my quirky ways, you are very generous. I can only wonder what the pros go through on this site when confronted with gullible and unknowledgeable amateurs like myself. It must be quite the struggle.

I would like to note that i was far from unknowing when i purchased the camera. I knew how long it had been on the shelf (three whole days), i knew the staff who i trust and who give me plenty of good deals and have even given me free filters before. I also knew that at 4 actuations including my first test shot to find that out means the likely hood was that next to nobody had touched the kit before me was very high (and if memory serves i was one of those 3 actuations when testing the live view a day or two prior) i also knew the chances of getting a better deal on my old kit was remote due to my good relationship with those in the shop. In my opinion there is display kit, demo kit and second hand. Display, if untouched, is exactly the same as new. Demo gets looked after and serviced, and light use only at events. Second hand is, of course, well used. But that of course is only my opinion. As it happens i was happy to get my camera as it was just after launch when they were still light on the ground. I know what you mean, if it was another type of electronics such as a laptop or a TV which is on power 24 hours a day on display where people can prod it i would have the same opinion as you, but a camera under lock and key on the shelf for 72 hours? I was and still am ok with that. When i buy something i want it in my hand as soon as the money is passed over, internet perchances are long winded and unreliable to me.

I feel I must thank you for your obvious concern for my consumer rights, and i feel i can really rely upon you in this respect for advice and guidance. I would like to get some more from you if thats ok? Recently i got a second hand Sigma 50mm - 150mm f2.8 Mk1 for £349 from the same shop, ex demo lens which had been looked after. I can't help but wonder, now you have enlightened me, weather i have been diddled on this lens too? Also, now i have this capable lens what should i be thinking of selling my old Nikon 50mm f1.8 for? They guys in the shop told me not even to think of offering it to them as they would not be able to offer me enough cash to make it worth my while selling it.

Many thanks in advance,

Your good mate,

Atavar.
