Body only, or with the kit lens?
If you want the lens too, try to look on Ebay for a second hand 350D or 400D.

That's a pretty good model, I don't think you will find something significantly better in this price range.

yes, the Canon XS / 1000D is in that range but another option would be to save a little more money and get the newerT1i (500D) - more features, video, etc. even the Canon XSi (450D) is better for just a $100 more.

Suggest you consider the Olympus E450 or E620. Both are small & lightweight and have excellent lenses, ideal for what you want. I'm not sure about prices in USA but they both offer great features and image quality for their price

I don't own any Olympus gear, but just bought my son an E 520 with two lens set for under $500. At the value end of the scale, I think Olympus is about the best you can do. I shoot Nikons but they are considerably more expensive for the same level of versatility at that price point.

I just picked up an Olympus E-420 w/ lens at Walmart for $399. I bought it as a "pocket" camera to use when I don't want to lug my D3 or D200 around, and I have to say, I'm fairly impressed. Even with the smaller sensor, high ISO noise is better than the D200 in most cases. It's light, very responsive, decent build for what it is, and very, very petit for an SLR, which is perfect for my use. Kit lens is tolerable, but slow, though even with no IS/VR I still can get sharp shots most of the time. Canon may be a better setup in most cases, but for the price/performance ratio, the Oly is a good option.

true they are the smallest DSLR, but I'm not convinced that Olympus is the best

actually the best option for $450.00 is the sony alpha 230. Can't beat a cheap dslr that takes good images and has built-in image stabilization. you'll save a lot on future lenses for sure.

none of them are, they all have their pro's/con's

that's the beauty of it all... you simply pick your battle and move on

right, Nikon lens prices are absolutely insane!

For $450. the Rebel XS with the 18-55 IS is the best buy. It has been the best selling DSLR for the last few years. There may be a couple that are less expensive but the Rebel XS is better overall. Ansonn

Never said it was the best, said it was a good option.

In my case, the size is important - I bought it to replace a G10, so wanted as compact a camera as possible, with better high ISO and very little shutter delay. Anything bigger and I might as well just use the D200. The Oly fits the bill better than any P&S, and the money I got from selling the G10 paid for the whole thing w/ nothing out of pocket at all.

The 18-55IS lens it comes with is a great general purpose lens. There's no better choice that isn't much more expensive. Then, add a used 50/1.8 for $80 or so.
