Does anyone know when/if Apple will be updating Camera Raw to support the Canon EOS 7D? I would hope soon so I can use Aperture for my 7D photos.

It looks like on average they add support for Canon cameras within a month or two of them being released, so I would have thought they would have updated it by now to include the 7D. Any thoughts? Maybe they are working too hard on Aperture 3 at the moment?

Adobe Labs has released a beta of Camera Raw 5.6 and the equivalent module for Lightroom, adding support for a variety of cameras including Canon 7D.

You can download it from: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.6#Release_Notes

The complete list of models supported is:

Canon EOS 7D
Canon PowerShot G11
Canon PowerShot S90
Leaf Aptus II 5
Mamiya DM22, DM28, DM33, DM56, M18, M22, M31
Nikon D3s
Olympus E-P2
Pentax K-x
Panasonic FZ38
Sigma DP1s
Sony A500
Sony A550
Sony A850

I believe the OP was asking about Apple , not Adobe.

Wouldn't that come from Adobe first? Since they developed it? I'm pretty sure Apple will release Camera Raw update after Adobe is done and Camera Raw goes gold.

One of us is confused.

Canon RAW is developed by Canon. Adobe has their own software people who come up with ACR. Canon provides DPP.

I always assumed that Apple has their own people work up the raw conversion from info from Canon and have no connection to Adobe.

Is that right or wrong??

Folks, the OP mentioned Aperture. That is Apple's proprietary software. What probably threw this off is the mention of Camera Raw, which is the way that Adobe refers to their RAW processing software. It has nothing to do with Apple's own RAW processor contained within Aperture.
it would have to come from Apple

Actually, Apple's "Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Updates" are more like part of the OS, they are not just for Aperture.

Once it's updated, you can view the supported raw files in the Finder, Preview, iPhoto, etc.

Unfortunately, only Apple knows when an update will be released.

To clarify, I was referring to when Apple would update their RAW profile support for Mac OS X which Aperture uses (as does iPhoto and Preview). I believe it is called Apple Digital Camera Raw, but I see how that could easily be confused with Adobe Camera Raw. My apologies for any confusion. Here is some background found on Wikipedia:

"In 2005, Apple Computer introduced several products which offered raw file support. In January, Apple released iPhoto 5, which offered basic support for viewing and editing many raw file formats. In April, Apple introduced a new version of its operating system, Mac OS X v10.4, which added raw support directly to the operating system, as part of the ImageIO framework, which adds raw support automatically to the majority of Mac OS X applications both from Apple (such as Preview, Mac OS X's PDF and image viewing application and Aperture, a photo post-production software package for professionals) as well as all third party applications which make use of the ImageIO frameworks. Semi-regular updates to OS X generally include updated support for new raw file formats introduced in the intervening months by camera makers."

Please do not apologize, you made it clear you were asking about Apple update, not Adobe. The only one who needs to apologize is me for not reading your question thoroughly. I've just noticed it's 5 days old, no one even responded to your question, and I just wanted to help.

My sincere apologies :(

I'm still waiting also.
I will buy the 7D only when Aperture supports the files.
Still waiting.

Just to add to the confusion, if the OP wants to use Aperture, DNG 5.6 Beta is an option, converting the Canon Raw files to DNG format, which Aperture will import. Admittedly, it's no where near as good as using the original Canon Raw file, but it does give the option of using 7D Raw (equiv.) files with Aperture, while Apple do their usual impression of a slug on prozac in getting the update out - I think it was best part of 3 months before they produced the 50D update.

Dave.

Great news for anyone that has been waiting: Apple just posted a software update: "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update Version 2.7" that includes support for the Canon EOS 7D, the EOS 1DmkIV, and a few other cameras. I'm glad my wait didn't last too long as I was really having trouble using DPP instead of Aperture.
