I am just downloading now the Capture NX 2.2.4 update... here is hoping that some things have REALLY been fixed. According to the release notes a HEAP of issues have been addressed that sound very promising. Heck my fingers are crossed that they have it right this time...

Of note there is supposed to be "compatibility" with Vista & Win 7 64bit. Not as a 64 bit app mind you, rather still at 32 bit. I don't really care so long as it works! However I suspect that there will be a speed and memory penalty in 32 bit mode.

Here's hoping :)

Yes, emulated 32bit environment. You might see a speed improvement with faster RAM, CPU, BUSSes and disk, but it is still a 32bit app and can ever only address upto 4Gb RAM. Where that upto 4Gb RAM is allocated by the OS does not matter. What you'll likely see, IMO, is it crashing faster.

Crash faster ... from past history with their releases I'd laugh if it wasn't so serious :) I did chuckle though...

My initial, particularly brief findings are that this release is quite snappy indeed (heck what am I saying), amazingly so. I have carried out various single image operations.

My work flow is 90% something along the lines of ...

1. Find the directory where my files are (hooray Nik have fixed the directory file naming ordering issue). i.e Windows Explorer, View NX and Capture NX now list files with a numbering scheme in the "correct" numerical order i.e 1,2,3....8,9,10,11,12,13 etc rather than 1,11,12,13,2,3....7,8,9)

2. Identify pic to work on (raw image image preview now VERY quick)

3. Auto levels and bring back contrast to suit (I note that the bl@@dy tab key still does not work)

4. D-Lighting to suit (I press tab and the focus goes into wonderland still .. why is this so hard, Nik used to have this right)

5. USM to suit (again the tab key is mystery)

6. Maybe some noise reduction (seems quite quick)

7. Save to tiff for printing. Again quite quick (it still remembers my last save directory session which is not the same as the current directory ... NX needs some options in this area)

So overall so far so good but I have a long way to go (and so do Nik) before I give the thumbs up but I do appreciate Nik's efforts even though they may be progressing somewhat at a snails pace to fix their problems.

Pity Nik still have not figured out what a tab key is used for in their dialogs still (sheeze this annoys me)

But I'm always happy to have an update. I will definitely acknowledge that I had crashes and hangs under Vista. That's why I ended up going to Win7 a bit earlier than I usually would change OSs. NX 2.2.3 trashed my Vista installation. Not sure who is the culprit, NX or Vista; hard to say, given that those two are perhaps the most notorious pieces of software that I've ever used. Still, when it works, I really love what NX can achieve with NEFs.

Without a beg screen requiring registration and paying for download? Nikon's site has only 2.2.3.

Incidental Rant: first link in a Google search of "capture nx 2.2.4 download" yielded a link to a site ( http://www.downarchive.com/software/graphics__design/68260-nikon-capture-nx2-224.html ) that requested me to register for an account with e-mail and password, and only after that did they inform me that I needed to PAY to download it. That sort of vendor assures that I will never again dignify their site with a click. If they'd only let me know up front that they were going to charge, I could have gone straight to ignoring them, and never provided them any opportunity to beg for money. Then they could die as a company that much quicker - how nice!

I agree, it works very fast. And after the first hour of testing, no problems...

I was opeinig multiple times 10-15 NEF's @ once and doing some initial RAW PP-actions , and no problems @ all...
If it keeps this way, it's great.

I prefer one really good picture in a day over 10 bad ones in a second...

It won't install over my current installation - says something to the effect of wrong region, please uninstall old version and try again...

I need a US version...

darn it, I just figured out the problem: I'm in Afghanistan, on an internet connection routed through Germany, so it keeps giving me the European version...I'll have to figure out how to make internet explorer not act like a European...

As I said in last post...I need to force the download of the US version, though I am in Afghanistan on an internet connection routed through Germany...So I reckon Nikon, Windows, or both are trying to "help" me by automatically giving me the european version, which will not install over my US version...anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Odd, they must have posted the wrong version, then - this is from the NikonUSA website.

Yes, you sent the right link. I think I figured out my problem - I am in Afghanistan, on an internet connection routed through Germany - so I think Nikon is trying to "help" me by sending the European version...I need a way to cause them to send the US version when I click the download link....ugh...

Thanks for your effort
