Automatic Playback (preview) zoom

Hi guys, I just bought a d90 and after using a Minolta and an Alpha 200 for a few years I got used to the auto zoom on the preview after taking a picture in order to check focus, I have looked for this option on the d90 and can´t seem to find it, is it possible to do this on this camera or am I looking for something that doesn´t exist?

It´s a bit of a hassle to manually zoom on each playback to check if the image is correctly focused...

Auto zoom doesn't describe anything to me. After viewing the display LCD, hitting the Quality (+) button will zoom with each press until a couple of steps beyond 100% crop. It will frame faces in focus and allow you to jump from face to face to check if eyes are open even though not using the Live View mode. You can also pan and tilt the zoomed image using the selection pad. Not knowing what those other cameras do, I would say the D90 has some surprising features to help "chimp".

On my D80 (and I assume the D90), you can maintain the same zoom level set for the first picture you review on each subsequent picture when using the rear command dial to move from picture to picture in review mode.

On my D80 (and I assume the D90), you can maintain the same zoom level set for the first picture you review on each subsequent picture when using the rear command dial to move from picture to picture in review mode.

I just discovered you can hold the zoom and move from picture to picture, only you use the rear command dial since the pan is controlled by the 4 point navigation button while in zoom mode. It looks like the D90 has all the bases covered.

I do that to my wife all the time, except she doesn't make a happy face. I did not presume anything about the D90. I tried it, and it worked.

Thanks for the replies, I think I did't make myself clear enough, maybe the funtion I am talking about is not as common as I though. I will try to explain in detail.

Sony and Minolta Slrs, have a setting that when activated, once you take a picture it displays it a couple of seconds so you can check it befor taking more pics, the d90 does this also, what I can't seem to find in the d90 is the option to automatically display the picture at certain zoom level, without having to press the magnifier button, as I said, Sony/Minolta SLRs have this option, even my Lx3 has it.

It has proven to be a useful since on those cameras all you have to do is press another button to revert back to full frame view and since most of the time I just want to check if the image was correctly focused, it saves me from having to press more buttons and I can just move on and take more pics.

So far I think I'm out of luck on this one, any ideas?

i know what you mean.
D90 doesnt have auto zoom as you preview.

the only thing that i am not understand is you said auto zoom save you time. that time is just a left thumb press to zoom in. that saving time will let you have more time to take photographs. if you review the photos everytime taking photo, it is not time saving at all, even with auto zoom.

i switch off the preview. on and off, i press play button to preview. is this method saving more time to take photos?

The D90 doesn’t have the feature you want, one that allows you to preview your photo at some magnification other than the default when the image first appears on the LCD. As dirfit wrote, gimping itself, especially every shot is for the most part a real time-waster. I may gimp a shot or two when I first start shooting to check on exposure and then set EV if needed. I don’t for the most part shoot studio or staged shots and my shots aren’t reproducible, so there really isn’t much use in checking the focus after every shot as there is no chance to retake the shot.

Before my D90 I owned a D50 and before that a Sony F717 and those two cameras had such terrible LCDs that it was virtually impossible to determine whether the shot was in focus or not. I can’t count the times a shot looked good, and then viewed on my monitor it turned out soft. The D90’s HD LCD is a huge improvement but even so my default setting for Preview is OFF. The exception is when I’m doing close-ups where the DOF is so narrow that it frequently takes several attempts to get your subject in the DOF window; even then I sometimes find that what I thought looked good on the camera’s LCD, didn’t look good on my computer’s monitor. I’m learning that when the focus is critical, like with close-ups, using Live View does a better job of focusing; I can move the focus point anywhere on the screen and I can sometimes zoom in. One big problem with using Live View is seeing the screen in bright sunlight, but that is also a major problem when gimping too. Another problem is the focusing is too slow unless a tripod is used as the subject is apt to move in and out of DOF window unless the photographer is as steady as a tripod – few are.

If you blow up any photograph, even one in perfect focus, you will eventually reach a point where the resolution drops off so much that the image looks soft. Even those of us who don’t make large prints have experienced this when trying to crop an image too much. Well the reverse is also true; you can reduce the size of a picture that is quite soft and eventually it will begin to look sharp and a 3”, or small. LCD is pretty small. Yes you can zoom in, but there is only so much resolution with a LCD and zooming soon becomes counterproductive.
