Im thinking of trying to get some shots in the rain, im gonna try using a plastic ziplock bag and putting it over the camera to protect it. Has anyone tried this? Im a little bit scared to try it in the heavy rain, but its not raining too hard right now and i think if i put a ziplock bag on it, it shouldnt get wet.

GOOD LUCK, Let us know how that works out for you. I know I would NOT try that.

I have taken many photos in light rain or misty conditions. You have to keep the lens clean (water drops on the glass) and I shield the camera (usually in my coat) when not taking a photo, but thats it. No ziplock bags. Wipe down the camera body aftwards.

In a camara magazine I saw recently a picture of a DSLR covered in a clear transparent disposable plastic showercap. The elastic strap was neatly around the lens where it connects to the body. It leaves the rest of the lens unprotected but the camra body was covered leaving the buttons visible and can be operated.

I ended up attaching a small umbrella to the camera. It worked quite well, but it was not raining really hard. I assume for really hard rain i would have to put some kind of plastic over it. My friend was showing off how his Canon 7d is weatherproof by taking it in the rain with no protection at all, but somehow i would still be weary to just let my camera get wet even if i had a 7d.
