Hi,

I have been following posts on this forum for quite some time now.....while debating (endlessly) between the D60 and S2 as an upgrade path from my trusty E-10.

Today I took the plunge and ordered the S2, to be delivered in the morning.

Lots of great folks here on the forum (as there are on the Oly SLR).

Looking forward to getting to know many of you as time goes on.

I have one small question at present: when I placed my order I was somewhat chagrined to learn that the AC adapter is not included in the kit (USA model).......I had understood that it would be. The vendor said that Fuji originally WAS including the adapter, but recently has stopped doing that.

Where would be the best place to buy the adapter, and how much does it cost?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes,

David

Hi Jim,

I ordered from Calumet.....as my usual vendors were, of course, out of S2 stock.

The (very nice, low key) sales guy at Calumet said that they have been surprised at Fuji's recent change in no longer including the adapter.

I didn't get the sense that it was any kind of ploy. (Especially since he showed no interest in trying to sell me an adapter seperately.)

Perhaps just Fuji attempting to pad their profit margin slightly??

In any case, I am disappointed that it will not be in the kit.

And I'll have to find a source for one soon. Any ideas?

Best wishes,

David

DF, you sure you got a US model? Do you got the CD with shooting software and EX converter?

US model should include AC adaptor and these softwares. You can contact Fujifilm to confirm that.

Hi Xin,

Well......I was assured by Calumet that they only sell USA models (no grey).....and that the absence of an AC adapter is a recent change by Fuji.

I will wait to see what is actually included in the package when it arrives tomorrow.

But.....assuming there will be no adapter, I may then contact Fuji to confirm that it is no longer being included by them.

Calumet is supposed to be a very reputable outfit, no?

I've dealt with Calumet for years and they are one of the most reputable photo companies around. I'm pretty sure that they don't sell grey market stuff. Check Fuji's site.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for saying that. It was also my impression that Calumet has an excellent reputation.

So.....if their info is correct, then Fuji has indeed recently changed their policy re: inclusion of the adapter.

Where can I get one, and what specs should I be seeking?

The AC adapter is an interesting question. I got my S2 from Canada and it didn't have the AC adapter. I couldn't find one in stock from any US vendors, so I called Fuji and they weren't sure they could sell me one or not. So, I just got the adapter from the same place I got the camera: McBain Camera in Alberta. It cost about $40 (US). I couldn't see saving a few bucks by getting a non-oem converter.

Hi Steward,

Thanks for that information.

My US vendor (Calumet) isn't selling them seperately either.....so I need to locate a source.

Like you, I would prefer to get the Fuji (oem) model.

Do you have a phone number for McBain's??

Hi Warzab,

I reckon you know how difficult the decision is!

Actually, it seems one can't go too far wrong with either choice.

In the end, I was pushed toward the S2 primarily because:

1. Seemingly better high ISO capability (I'll be shooting some indoor action stuff)

2. Presumably slightly better AF

3. Purported excellent colors for portraiture (also firewire connectivity for working tethered).

4. I've used a friend's D60, and there was "just something" about its ergonomics that didn't quite suit me (purely personal thing).

Hope that helps.

Best wishes,

David

P.S. Oh, for lenses I'm starting with: Nikon 50mm 1.4, Tokina 28-70 2.6-2.8, Tamron 24-135, and Sigma 70-200 2.8.

You didn't ask me, but I'll butt in because I just went through the same decision. I already had a Canon G2 and 420EX flash, so I was biased toward the D60. I finally chose the S2 because it combined two image quality related pluses:

1. Great quality jpegs straight out of the camera. I was impressed by the pros who don't have the time to process hundreds of raw files. Look at http://www.pro4um.com (requires registration)

2. Great raw capabilities. If I want the ultimate in image quality, I can shoot raw and convert. Uwe Steinmueller, from http://www.outbackphoto.com (look at this site) said,..."the S2 images with Qimage look better than any other 6 MP camera so far."

I got the 28-105 lens because I liked the macro capability and because it has gotten good reviews, and the 50 f1.8 for low light.

I sold all my Canon related stuff on Ebay, and I'm very happy with the S2.

I agree with your points about the image quality in posted samples and the opinions of several experts.

I considered the Nikon 28-105 very seriously (and also the 24-85 G), but in the end decided on the Tamron 24-135 as a knock-around lens, because of its greater range, especially at the wide end. The Tamron has gotten some pretty good press, as has the 28-105.

Hi Allen,

Thank you very much! That link is exactly what I need......assuming my S2 kit arrives tomorrow "sans adapter", then I will order one from Canoga.

BTW, what were the factors that made you finally decide on the S2?

David,

You made the right decision about the Tamron 24-135. I had the Nikon 24-85, 24-120 and still have the 28-105, and I made side by side comparisons at every F stop from F5.6 to F16 and the Tamron beats all 3 of them. Maybe not the 28-105 but equals the 28-105 at every focal length plus it has the extra range. The quality of workmaship is also outstanding on the Tamron plus the front lens element does not rotate during focus or zoom which is a big plus when you are using Polarizer filter. BTW I had a D30 before and I like the ergonomics of the S2 a lot better. The picture quality from the RAW images are fantastic, so much so that I sold my D1X after compared the results. Could not be happier with the S2!

David,

I went with the S2, for many of the same reasons you did. The better focusing system, bigger files, as well as the outstanding images straight from the camera. I also use a Mac, so my computer is fire wire ready. Everyone says I am buying into a system. The main advantage of the D60, was the Canon L lenses. They are great, but I'm not sold just on their lenses. Nikon, Tokina, Tamron, and Sigma all make lenses from average to outstanding. Also by going with the Nikon mount, I have the option in the future to go with Fuji, Nikon, and Kodak cameras. With the investment of lenses I did not want to be limited to one manufactors camera.

Excellent points about the lenses, Allen.

I, too, found it appealing to commit to a "system" with more than one manufacturer using the lens mount.

My only reservation at this point is in not having waited for Photokina next week......it will be very intriguing to see what the Olydak turns out to be. Smaller, lighter, less expensive system?? But who knows how or if it will catch on?

All in all, I am excited to be gaining a significant upgrade to my E-10....and one that is both available NOW and using a proven line of lenses.

Best wishes,

David

Hi,

I appreciate your comments very much about the Tamron 24-135. That one was a really tough decision for me. I was drawn to the Nikon 24-85 AF-S G because of focusing speed......but eventually opted for the greater range of the Tamron. How do you find the Tamron's AF speed?

Thanks again for your comments.

I thnk I would be calling fuji and seeing what they can do for you. If you push hard enough I think you might find one in the mail one day soon. Seems unusual that they just stopped including them. I wonder if they reduced the price as well.

http://www.fujifilmsupport.com/accesory/html/fxs2pro/s2pro.html

Shows a part#, but has TBA for the price. Says to me its not available yet in the US. Tell them you will be shooting mostly tethered, you had expected the AC adapter to be there, and that you need one right away. Heck, tell'em that you CCD is really dirty right out of the box and you need an AC adapter right away so you can clean it....

I am of the personal belief that if you give it to one, you should give it to all. To suddenly pull it out seems kinda crooked to me!
