More shots,from a local zoo,taken with FZ8

some shot in RAW ,some jpeg

this animal had a mean streak..or i just annoyed him,as he tried to put his antlers thru the fence,to poke at me :(
Elk

A brand new exibit, the Gibbons...these are so adorable!

this eagle (male) can't fly....but he tries...they had just fed him,and his mate,mice...but they wouldn't eat it,while I was around

Eagle

Bobcat (I think)
Caught him yawning....as I'm boring to him,lol

Grizzly Bear

Hardly ever see them,always hiding/sleeping

Crane

I like them, especially the bored Bobcat.

They all look pretty nice except the eagle. Did you crop heavily or use some different processing? I am seeing some strange shadow blotchiness and even a little PF. Also the whites look a little gray. Just curious how this one was processed and if raw or jpeg?

There is a bit of purple fringing on the last bird too, where the gray feathers meet the white ones.

I guess i did mess this one up.

Original was shot in RAW,as was the Crane,so the PF wasn't removed by the Venus in camera processing...and i didn't really notice it.

good eye,Jim

Here's the original Eagle shot (the jpeg, not the RAW)

so,yes,it is cropped ,a bit..and seems i further ruined it...lol with my attempt to edit it.
I appreciate the honest critique , Jim

Feel free to always point out the flaws....it will help me improve!!

enjoy your day !!

Animals always make great subjects no exception here. IMO the photos could use a bit more contrast.

Thanks for looking and commenting,Daniel!

Colder weather ,sems much better, for many zoo animals...as in the summer, they like to 'hide and sleep'
:)

I like them all, each animal has a different expression. Maybe the bear and the bobcat are my favourites.

I haven't been to the zoo recently as I thought the animals would hide from the winter chill, but I'll go see what they're up to now you say they don't mind the cold. The zoo may not be perfect, but out in the wild can be much nastier.

The jpeg looks nicer in this case.

I keep finding flaws in my own shots and have to edit them. As a matter of fact I just noticed something wrong with my fall colour shot.

I try to be honest, I sometimes keep my mouth shut and usually try and offer techniques to correct it. I think the danger in raw is moving the recovery up too far. I often see this when people use the shadow/highlight tool to aggressively or some of the programs such as Topaz Adjust. The PF is super easy to correct.

There is a chap on Flickr who has a Nikon D300, all the best lenses, flash with better beamer, big tripod, but even though his shots could be fantastic he loves to use too much NR and they end up like paintings. I haven't told him anything because he may be intentionally doing this so people don't swipe his shots. Plus I couldn't capture the birds he does in a million years.

Your probably right.

some were shot RAW...and others jpeg.

The jpegs have in camera sharpness, contrast, and saturation turned down...then I add it later,in processing...but i guess i didn't add enough back

What I like is the expressions that you have captured on the faces of those diverse creatures. Very good set!

Great pics;
thanks
reminds me why i hate zoos. Poor things.
It's not all bad....some animals live 4 times as long,in a zoo, where they are well fed and cared for, than if in the wild.

the Eagles,at this particular zoo,for instance ,would of been dead already...one can't fly,and the other only has one eye.

the wolves ,also will live longer

Over time, some do llose their instictual behavior, like tigers, and other 'hunters'...as they no longer hunt, for their food, and perhaps loose some muscles, too, over time (not being as active)

Wow! that's one fat bobcat!
Not at all like the one I saw leaping past my back yard.

Thanks....just found out that bobcat is very big,for it's size, and they feed it very well, lol.

Some animals ,might not be on display (like birds, alligators),but those that are, will be more active, for sure. It's still hit or miss, any time you go to a zoo.

Earlier,in the day,is better, most times....unless you catch them, when they are feeding the animals.

Some zoo's have a schedule, and you can plan to see that exhibit, doing feeding times
The zoo may not be perfect, but out in the wild can be much nastier.
Very true...it's afe at the zoo...compared to the wild.

I wasn't sure,so I called the Zoo,and asked,telling them the location(next to the Eagle display)....and sure enough,it is a Bobcat...but ,when i said,i was told it looks too big,for a Bobcat,the lady laughed,and said,they are very big (i guess there is two of them)

so ,I joked and said "you must feed them very well"......and was told

"oh yes ,they eat well."

--Nice set of images.
Thanks,Pap !
Most favorite is the Gibbon, looks sad, perhaps it wanted you to help it escape.
Haha i think your right.
I get into enough trouble, hopping fences ,in this zoo :)

(not actually inside the animals exhibit, but some have two fences...so at times, i climb over the first one,to avoid the link fence, from getting in the way of the photo's )
