Just trying out my new 28mm AIS manual lens.
Works fine.
Just can't figure out why the built-in flash won't fire.
The flash light keep flickering indicating a problem.

What am I missing?

The chances of ever using it with the flash are just above zero to none but I'd still like to figure this out.

thanks.

Mark

AIS lenses do not meter on the D90. You can make the built-in-flash fire, but you have to set it to manual and choose the power level.

Thanks John...and I figured it out.

Calculating the power using the flash on manual will just take some experimenting.

Press the Menu button (under the Play button), highlight the 'pencil looking icon and select the "e" option Bracketing/flash, then select e2 Flash cntrl for built-in flash. Select manual (using the right arrow) then select the output (I use full). The shutter speed can be anything from 200 and below. Change the aperature to get the exposure you want.

This is why I should have looked closer at the models. I would have chosen the D300(s).

Oh, and it won't work with a speed light, only the built in flash. I tried my 50 1.4 AIs, and my SB400.

Thanks for the detailed info.

I'm now very clear.

I may never need to use the info since my purpose in buying the lens is street shooting, primarily zone focused.

But I figured that I should know how to use it indoors just in case.

I didn't follow your apparent non sequitur re the D300S. I assume it means it's more versatile re the use of manual lenses, but that wasn't clear.

I'm happy with the D90, which in terms of size and weight is already over my ideal size and weight limit for candid photography. But still I'm curious about your thinking.

Mark;

All I meant by the D300/300s statementis they will actually meter with the AI lenses, which makes using my older 35mm lenses more useable.
