Hey Gang,

I have a new macro technique to share that I am very excited about. I've been experimenting with the Vivitar 285HV flash with the Omnibounce on the E-10 with the MCON-35 macro extension lens. Using the pink setting and f 8, shutter speed 125. You would think that this flash would FRY anything this close (about 4 inches from the camera), but the exposure is dead on with no horrible highlights! Check this out!

Nice, I wish that leaf was not in the background.
The lighting on the eyes is very good.

Looks great !!! It is amazing how sometimes the critters will pose like that !!!

Here is something I used to do with 35mm macro in addition what you are doing add a slave off to the side - its like you said you would think it would be fried by that much light - I will have to get some of that stuff out and scan it - anyway the end result was a near black background !

Hello All,

I sure want to thank you for taking a look at these! Another thing, never say never!

I have always deplored flashed macros! The flash is so obvious and the highlights are invariably blown. Over the past month, I've gotten a few suggestions to use a flash, get a ring flash, etc. I actually did look at the price of a ring flash and searched the forums for user experiences. They are prohibitively expensive, to the tune of almost $300.00US! And, the few experiences were less than pleasing due to the E-10's f-11 smallest aperature. These ring lights are just too bright and you have no way to dim them lower. Since I already had the Vivitar 285HV for my UZI and I knew it worked great on the E-10, I figured I would give it a try, fully expecting it to FRY anything within 10 feet. Understand the MCON and the mantus pics were 4 inches from one another! That mantus actually took one jump and landed right on my MCON!

So I was amazed at the results I got..but more importantly at what potential results this can bring in the future. Just think: ALWAYS f-11! It is a dream come true! Max DOF at 4 inches! Rain, sun, shaddow, where ever! So, I'll be planning a trip back to my fav butterfly house any day now (Wednesday I hope).

Anyway, I did put a few more mantus pics on PSig if you are interested. While I am proud of these, I am most excited about the possibilities for the future. It is a great day!
