Keep shooting

HI,

Thanks for posting these but it is really much better to post them as a response to my first post. Posting as a response to my photos means nobody else knows they are here.
Next time?
Richard

Firstly, beautiful shots, really crisp and well focused :)

Now the question. Is that the gannett colony on the North Island across from Auckland? I visited one a few years back which had an awesome view down onto the top of their rock, but I didn't have any camera gear back then.

I'm leaving for Auckland next Monday and will be staying for a month, hopefully the weather holds out and I can find some time to take the E3 and Bigma to seee some new sights........in good sunlight!

Stunning bird, really nicely captured.

I was lucky this week, I'd been looking for a tolerant kestrel to photograph while hunting for two years and actually found one. I only wish I had my E3 and bigma with me, but I had to make do with my 'throw in the car' 510 and 70-300!

Here are a few shots that I took over Thanksgiving weekend during a little road trip to northern Mexico. I used a Canon EOS 7D and EF 500mm f/4L IS USM w/EF 1.4x II for all of them. The lighting was pretty crummy (it looked like it was about to rain at any minute) but the birds were pretty neat.

Northern Jacana

Grove-billed Ani

Squirrel Cuckoo

Altamira Oriole

Hooded Oriole

Bat Falcon

Roadside Hawk

Red-tailed Hawk

Couch’s Kingbird

Roseate Spoonbill

Elegant Trogon

Least Grebe

Green Kingfisher

Rose-throated Becard

Blue-headed Vireo

Ivory-billed Woodcreeper

Melodious Blackbird

Social Flycatcher

Masked Tityra

Boat-billed Flycatcher

Crested Caracara

Hi Richard,

Thank you,,

I'm sorry, the Gannets were from Muriwai Beach just north of Auckland.
We have a very nice and accessible colony there and is is growing year by year.
The Gannets are competing with people for space and moving more and more inland.

Never been to Cape Kidnappers but who knows maybe this Christmas Holiday.

Only been in New Zealand for three years, so many places to explore and so many photo opportunities.

Cheers

Wow, the whole collection is very nice. My favorite was looking down on the Hawk in flight with all his feathers spread just perfectly. Lots of great color too.

And now for something totally different

Thankd Rob. I was busy all summer and didn't get out shooting once. Hopefully some time will start opening up now that it's winter. It's a better time to shoot anyway, hopefully I can use it to justify getting an E30.

Thnaks. For just having the toss in the car lowly lttle 510 and 70-300 combo you sure did great. I'd love to have a flight shot like you posted.

@ Richard:

Thanks for picking up this post, I didn't see it the first time.

Great photo's on your pbase site specially the full frontal in flight of the Gannet.

@Private Custard:
(how do you come up with a nick like that :) )

When you're here see if you can find some time to visit Tiritiri Matangi

( http://www.tiritirimatangi.org.nz/ ) an open sanctuary with lots of endangered birds you won't see on the mainland because of the predator pressure.
Like the North Island Robin:

Hope you have pleasant stay over here and always keep your camera handy.

Thanks Abeakerz there were a few that were not so good as the light is not so good in Scotland at this time of year. I am enjoying the lens although in low light out at 500mm the auto focus does hunt a bit so some of the shors I just use manual focus. I guess I will be looking out my monopod for the Bigma.

Cheers Bob
