Waiting for D120...

Hello everybody,

right now I'm stuck with Minolta D5, and not too satisfied with this camera. Since I got a better job, I started thinking D60, but the (premature) announcement of D1s stopped me there.

The pro DSLR is way too expensive for me, but now that Canon has a 35 mm CMOS sensor technology, it seems to me it will not be too long before a more affordable camera with a big sensor appears as an upgrade to D60, hopefully within 2 years...

Well, what do you think? Am I mad or is it a real possibility? Should I just stick to my Minolta D5 and start donating blood to gather money for EOS D120?

Dennis

(anyway, one can happily live with a single kidney...)

why wait?

the D60 has so much to offer, and, even if there ever is a D120, it'll soon be replaced by the next model.

just look at what's already happened with your D5.......then there was the D7, then the D7i, and now the D7iH or whatever.......many complaints about the D7 were addressed by coming out with the D7i. very few (with the exception of noise) complaints are coming up with the 7i, but Minolta has upped it again with their latest version.

with the D60, i've yet to read about any complaints that are valid enough to make anyone not like one.

Canon is sure to up the D60 to the D?, but that's to be expected. thing is, are you going to wait 2 years for the next?? and then see a post describing the next?? in another two years? if that's the case, then you'll be using that D5 for a very long time.............have fun

1 D60 and some nice Canon glass+ soon to have the 1200mmL.

I agree! It's like the argument to wait until you can afford it ... to get married, have kids, get lenses! If you wait, you missed out on the experiences in the interim. The D60 is a dandy beast and I'm so more than happy with the results. When I work, my husband often shoots along side me with his Minolta D5. Which is a very nice camera and does some things exquisitely. But the difference in what each of us can and can't do ... and the results ... are like night and day.

Sounds like you're ready. Get the D60 and some Canon glass. The glass will move with you if/when you decide to move up. Meanwhile, you'll have a blast with your D60.

There is no D120.

The camera is the EOS-1Ds, and has already been (accidentally) announced by Canon. Do a search on Google, and you can read the announcement yourself.

Of course, there is no D120. I have extrapolated a little bit :)

Why wait? For two reasons:

First, I live in former Eastern European block. Since not long ago I used to earn roughly $250 per month, any DSLR was out of question. Even now, with much better job, it will take me quite a few months to earn enough for a D60 body and a set of entry-level lenses. I might as well wait for an update.

Second, I have this big sensor fetish. Would come in handy when shooting landscapes or buildings... And with 35mm/12Mpix sensor I could safely say that image quality can be better than any 35 mm film. You wouldn't believe how may digitalphobic photographers live around here... I'd love to shut them up with some hard facts :)

Thanks for all the feedback,

Adam

I don't think he is saying that he will continually wait for the next camera. Many people believe the D60 and the D100 is at parity with a 35mm even though with a few more dollars one get get slightly better pictures with the 1D and that is the rub. If the 1D can produce better pictures with fewer pixels then what will it be like at 11 megapixels with less noise, etc.

New cameras will continually reach the marketplace but we are either at or about to reach a point where the arguments will be more about features and less about picture quality issues.

I love my D60 and do not plan to purchase the 1Ds. However when the 9 or 11 megapixel comes out and improvements with the other features I think I may buy again. After this purchase I don't think I will again look too quickly to upgrade. I will not be surprised if the full sensor is kept for awhile only on the pro cameras as a way of differentiating between the prosumer and pro models.

sounds like you made your decision before you even posted this eh?
this forum really cracks me up to say the least.

sure there is some good and useful info from time to time, but there seems to be more jibberish than exact input.........guess the only reason i hang around is to see what dumb post shows up next..........LOL

biggles,

Sometimes even when people have their mind made up they need some assurance and a pat on the back. If you are so thick skinned that you never needed assurance for anything you have done in your life then I feel sorry for you.

This forum is used to exchange information and ideas and also to read different points of views. Because we are human we also have a tendency to express vulnerabilities not associated with the subject at hand. That is part of our humanity. This is not a scientific forum. It a meeting place for people to exchange ideas and maybe even make a few friends.

Biggles, you forgot about the friends’ part and you should try to rediscover it.

Larry,

thanks for your info... this makes sense, although does not make me happy :) Perhaps I'll have to get a D60 after all, if this distinction between pro and prosumer proves true for a longer time.

And don't worry about me and b* les - if his purpose in life is to laugh at other people, then let him be, he needs something to live for (don't we all?)
And I have pretty thick skin myself.
I love my D60 and do not plan to purchase the 1Ds. However when

Considering the D60 is about impossible to actually get lol I don't think I'd wait for the next model if you want one now. He who waits will be paralyzed by the fear of something new factor their entire life. Here is a fact. No matter what you buy or when you buy, you will pay too much and something newer and better will come out afterwards for less money. Is called the money you pay to ENJOY the product. The horizon will always offer a new product. But when looking out to see the horizon realize it may be further away than you think in terms of time! As soon as the new product ( i.e. D120 ) is close there will be another announcement of another new and excting product such as the next Canon with a Foveon 12MP sensor priced at $2495 USD and so on.If you do not have the need or desire for a DSLR right now and 2 years does not matter, then wait! But at some point the best you can do is decide on the best product at the time you want to spend the $$ and simply enjoy without looking back :)

I own and like a 1D. But if I had to choose between D60 and Nikon D100 I would take the Nikon, because:

-even is pic quality of D60 is slightly better, I am convinced the pic quality of D100 is very good too.
-price
-AF
-Nikon has better flash system

but than again-Canon´s lenses are great
probably nut much help my add.

Oh, one more thing: I thinkthe argument with the sensor-size makes sense. Think what you can save money in wide angle if you have a larger sensor.
