I know, I know ... this is just another boring flower picture, but I thought the effect was interesting, and thought I'd share it with the forum.

I took the picture with the nikkor 105 f1.8 Micro, which is one of my favorite lenses. The B&W was captured from the Red channel, which had a very nice range of contrast.

Ed,

I like the picture, nice glow effect from the centre of the flower. Did you use any flash? I am interested in the NIkon SB 29 macro flash but I expect its very expensice.

That's a really nice shot. I've been very pleased with the B&W conversions I'm getting from the D100. It seems to produce a really pleasing tonality.

Great pic! I'm hoping to be able to get a D100 soon...

Ooops... Forgot to ask. Did you take the pic in B&W or did you change it to B&W in Photoshop or another image editing program?

Hi Nighthawk,

No flash, incadescant light and a relatively long exposure. The original image was lit more towards the center because of the relatively short light to subject distance. The bright center of the image was done with some judiciously applied radial gradient.

I have taken some other exposures with an SB-80DX, and can tell you that it is a jewel of a flash. I haven't worked with any other TTL flashes with the D100, and have not used the SB-29. Good luck.

Hi Andy,

I took the picture as a normal (NEF) color shot because the D100 doesn't have a B&W mode. I did the conversion in PS7, which I prefer anyway, because you can do so much with the contrast and color channels before you desaturate the picture.

Thanks for answering my question Ed! I'm trying to save my pennies for a D100... I recently read somewhere that the best way to get a good b&w shot digitally is to take it in color and then convert in photoshop or something... You have proved them correct! I use Photoshop Elements 2.0 and was looking at the miranda website... Do you know why his plug-ins wouldn't work with PS Elements?

Hi Andy,

I can't answer that one for you. I don't have any insight into the differences between PS and PS Elements, so that one might be a question for Fred Miranda, or someone else on the forum. Sorry I can't be of help here.

The other point of B&W on PS I actually find preferable to the camera doing it. I had a 995, which produced very nice B&W, but I can do much more with NEF in Photoshop than I could in the camera.
