I'm a father of 4 and 2 year old. I carry a 28-300 Tamron XR (very soft) and 85 F1.8 (for portraits). I like the weight and reach of Tamron; but the quality is getting me to the point not taking any pictures with it at all.

28-135 IS usually. Occasionally 70-200 f2.8 if anticipating evening light.

Drop the bucks and get a Canon 28-70 f/2.8 L lens. It's become your all-time favorite.

Always a 16-35mm f/2.8 L and a 28-70mm f/2.8 L. Depending on the venue I may also bring along a 70-200mm f/2.8 L.

28-135 IS. When I go play (like I think you mean), I want one lens and want it to be as versatile as possible. Sturdy is nice too. I'm not shooting for the ages but this lens does some nice stuff: http://www.mainefocus.com/gallery5/

Also, you don't have to cringe if the 2 and 4 year olds get near it! :>

Funny... I carry a Canon 24-85 f3.5-4.5 and a Canon 70-200L F2.8 IS. And depending on venue, I'll also take my Sigma 17-35 f2.8-4, and/or Canon 1.4x TC, and/or Canon 50mm f1.8.

  • Canon EOS D-30 & PowerShot S100
  • Maybe one day I'll take a decent picture. In the meantime, I'll blame the equipment. :)

I've got a Lowepro phototrekker and try to keep most of my lenses in the car (when out and about on weekends)

I for some reason, i was limited in what lenses to take, it would be the 28-135 amd tje 70-200 2.8L IS.

I've got a 2-year old, a 6-year old and a 7-year old, and I was suprised how much I use the 70-200.

EOS D30 EOS 1D
28-135 IS
50 1.4
20 2.8
70-200 2.8L IS
100-400 4.5-5.6L
550 EX
and this is just a hobby!!!

When I'm on outings that would involve a lot of walking, I'm usually in a wheelchair and have come too close to dropping the whole kit to do much lens changing.

But you make a good point. The original post just said weekends not outings. My bad. I agree that if it's around home a bit more choice would be recommended. And I more than agree that the 70-200 is dandy.

On the other hand, if he's on a budget, I think we'd all agree the 28-135 IS would be a significant improvement on the Tamron. Actually he could do a lot worse than the 28-105/3.5-4.5 if he's really on a budget. That lens stayed on my film camera an awful lot of the time before I got the IS.

I'd add the 28-105 to my recommendations, ventezar.

I always carry a Tamrac Velocity sling bag with a 75-300 IS, 28-135 IS, and a 20-35. I hope to replace the 20-35 with the 16-35 L because the 20 is not wide enough for me on the D60. I can fit my 50 1.4 in there too if I think I will be using it. The 28-135 IS is most flexible and is perfect for picnics and parties (IMO).

My other lenses are 50 F1.4 and Sigma 24-70 EX. If I'm really good :), I could convince my SO for a 70-200 IS but I'm a little worried about the weight. And carrying that while trying to put a kid on the swing in the playground might not work so well.

And I figured the Tamron might be just as good as 28-105 or 28-135. Am I wrong with that assumption?

I use the Sigma 24-70. Not especially delighted with it. It seems a tad soft and also a bit warm. But the results edit well and until I can afford ...

Right now, I'm saving for my ultimate kit which will be the 50/1.8 I already have along with the 70-200L IS, 28-70L and 16-35L. I've already sold off all but my 28-135IS (which I'll keep as my tag-along lens - for weekends!), the 50/1.8 (which, as I say, I'll keep), and the Sigma 24-70 which I don't own - it belongs to the athletic conference I work for. So I'll have it as a backup or something.

From your kit, I really envy the 50/1.4. I'd love to try one some time - the 1.8 is so stunning, I can't imagine what the 1.4 would do!

I don't think I'd carry the 70-200 IS while trying to insert the kid onto a swing. One or the other might get hurt! :)

Ditto on the above lenses with me, except I have the 50mm 1.8. I find the IS indispensable. That would be a major problem for me with the long teles such as the Tamron mentioned. i.j.

I think your assumption is correct regarding the 28-105 vs 28-135. I just purchased the Tamron 28-300 XR and already have the 28-105. My limited expereince with this lens (Tamron) tells me that it is soft at the edges, somewhat warm in color, and might be a tad slower in comparison to my 28-105. However, I can't say the Canon performance is significantly better. Photodo ratings of the 24-85, 28-135 IS and the 28-105 are very similar, so I think if you are looking for a better lens than what you already have, you will need to look at the 28-70L or another prime to compliment your 50 f/1.4.

I have the Sigma 15-30 EX on the camera and take along the 100-400L in its original case. I also own the 70-200L IS and the 50/1.4 but don't seem to use those as much as the two above.

I use the 28-135 a lot BUT every time I use my 50/1.4 I find myself liking the pics better, specially of the shorter DOF.

5.6 is often too much DOF in my opinion. Also when I use my 80-200/2.8 I try to use it wide open in most situations.
SO I want to add either a 28-70/2.8 or maybe instead a 85 or 100 prime.
I also have the 17-35/2.8 which is a nice lens too.
