sports lens for d90

your best bet, would be the 70-200 F2.8. The Nikkor runs around $2000 so if price is an issue then look off brand, tamron, sigma. they are a little cheaper. or you could always go with a 50mm F1.8 they go for about $130. but you wont get any zoom out of it! hope this helps!

A slightly shorter (and very much cheaper/lighter) alternative is the Sigma 50-150. For sports I've never found the VR to be of much use, except for panning stability.

I've shot both, extensively, and I'd go as far as to say that when your shuttertimes are short enough, the Sig actually gives you sharper, better pictures. But I'm quite a "shaky" person, so as soon as I get close to 1/f - shuttertimes, VR pays the bill.

I'd also say that F/2.8 is a must, not an "option" for indoor sports, unless you shoot D3-series or D700... Then you can get by with a 70-300VR quite alright.

I purchased a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 and love it. I can see how the 50-150 f/2.8 would also be attractive as sometimes 70 is too long for close shots.

If you have no experience shooting indoor pictures, you should google it. I can't remember what they were but I found a few good sites that taught me how to shoot indoor sports. It'

Below is a recent picture I took with it:

It all depends on how much light you have. For many high school gyms, f2.8 lenses won't be fast enough. In these cases, you need one of the 50mm or 85 mm prime lenses (Depending on how close you can get and how large your budget is.)

For the price of the Nikon zoom lens you could buy a Nikon 50mm f1.8 ($130), a Nikon 85mm f1.8 ($425) and a Nikon 180mm F2.8 ($900). You would have enough left over for a Sigma 24mm f1.8 ($480). All are pretty fast and sharp lenses. This combo is great for shooting fast sports inside. How fast are you at changing lenses is the question? I own the three shorter lenses and crave the 180.

Agree. 70-200 vr is too slow for most indoor high school gyms. It won't give you shutter speed of 1/500 at iso 1600. Don't spend the money on it unless you rent one first and like the results. Also try the 85mm f1.8 lens too. Shoot it wide open or close to wide open.

What night time sports? Are we talking about high school football? My suggestion is you ask them to cancel the Friday game and schedule it for Saturday afternoon. :o)
