I had originally posted this in the Canon SLR Forum, but thought it was good enough to share with everyone.

Hello all:

In the past, to avoid appearing stupid when posting, and since I can't type worth a damn, I would copy & paste my post into Word to spell check it, then copy & paste it back into the forums. I came across a free spell checker for Internet Explorer that sits on the tool bar in IE5 or newer. It works great, is unobtrusive, and includes dictionaries for US, UK and Canadian english. It allows you to spell check your post while on the forums, without having to copy into another app.

The link is here: http://www.iespell.com/

Enjoy.

Now if NetScape and AOHell, which I understand owns same, would get off their duffs and develop a spell check program that would check and make corrections in context. Maybe that's wishing for too much.

My point in all this!

Try the spellchecker on my original post and it will correct very little. Spell checkers are marvellous tools, but in some ways an abomination. They are contributing to the degeneration of the English Language! They are reenforcing poor spelling. The word loose for lose is almost accepted as proper by most folk. I have seen it spelled that way even in the New York Times why it must be correct the spell checker thinks so.

p.s. Crashton, I'm curious. Did you misspell to? Did it make a correction?

I'm going to disagree with you here. I am a very poor speller. Because of my inability to spell I often 'dumb' down my words when writing a forum post. I haven't needed to do this with email and documents as I've had a spell checker at my disposal. (Before that I relied on a secretary.)

A spell checker has allowed me to more precisely communicate without spending large amounts of time thumbing through a dictionary.

And, because the spell checker quickly finds my mistakes and offers me a choice of correctly spelled words I have learned to correctly spell several words that I misspelled for 50+ years.

The word
loose for lose is almost accepted as proper by most folk. I have
seen it spelled that way even in the New York Times why it must be
correct the spell checker thinks so.
The 'loose/lose' problem is not a spell checker problem That's a lack of proof reading. That's another piece of software to be written.

(BTW, iespell just caught three of my misspellings, and one of yours....)

I don't make mistakes in spelling only typos(grin) . Oops marvellous!! Yes what is needed is something which checks words in context for meaning which I guess is what you call a proof reader. Actually I'm a lousy speller, and a worse typist. I use spell checkers too, I could not compose a letter or Email without them and will certainly install the reference checker to do the same for my web correspondence!

My point still remains. As a consequence to the use of spell checkers, poor spelling has been reinforced. The machine says it's right that makes it so! Yes if true proofreading, i.e. spell checking in context, were available the problem would be solved.

I really don't think you're disagreeing with me!

OK, so you use a spell checker and fire it up to check your post.

You find a spelling error(s) in the snippet of the previous post that you left in for reference. Do you correct or ignore?

(Yeah, it's a real minor point, but it's a slow news day.....)

When writing a follow up reply where is spell checker in DPReview.
Have down loaded but can't find spell checker liikee nnnow.
Hi George,

Go back to the first post in this thread. Click on the link to iespell and download the spell checker program. It's separate from this forum, works on all web sites, and works great!

You can install an icon on your tool bar at the top of the page (at least with Internet Explorer) and click to check anything you write. Also lets you add your own words/terms (such as EVF, LCD...).
