Who is waiting for the 5D M III instead of buying the M II?

I see no need to wait for the 5D III or what ever successor. I want a camera at this moment, and I do not want to wait for another 1.5 years. Of course there wil be a new camera out some time, that will be better. It should!

But If you are looking to buy something now it would be a no brainer. However in case you are already looking now to buy something in about 2 years you can wait of course.

Anyhow, I just bought my 5D mark II this week. And so far I love it!!!

Great view finder, great AF with the 24-105 and it delivers very good pictures. Clean, sharp, good colour rendition, and more than enough resolution!

I'm in exactly the same boat as you. Fairly happy with the 40D, though I do feel limited by the ISO performance, hence looking at the 5D2, but I'm not desperate to upgrade, so may well wait for a 5D3.

If we were on a car forum and someone were wondering if the 2011 model XYZ was going to be better, would you laugh at that person and tell them how much driving they were going to miss out on over the next year? Seriously.
Seriously. Get a life and quit waiting for technology to compensate for your shortcomings and lack of vision!
Malcolm

The 5D2 is an awesome camera but I require a better AF module. If it had this now, I'd snap one up.

As it stands, if the 5D III has better AF (7D system is fine) and the 7D's customisation, I'm in.

Skip,

You are quite right, that image you linked to was amazing in terms of detail. I can get that level of quality with my 5D as well. It is, however, always nice to have additional image quality to allow for printing as big as desired without having to worry too much about whether there is enough data there to support it. For me, the 'upgrade' to a Mark II (or Mark III) isn't about IQ, which is ALWAYS the number one issue, being a portrait photographer. It's the other things the camera does. The better LCD, the video, and, as I'd written previously, the micro adjust for focusing, which at this point is one of the really big advantages that I can see.

I'd forgotten about the micro adjust. But, for us, and in the position of making each purchase pay for itself, there wasn't really a set of features that made us go "AAHHHH!" and drop the hard earned cash to do so. The video is cool, and we'll probably pick up a 7D in the next few months, after all the taxes are paid, to experiment with its video and get used to the features. I'd guess that a mkIII version of the 5D will be out approximately a year after the advent of a 1Ds mIV. IF it has the improvements of the 7D added to the IQ of the 5D series, that's the one that we'll buy. And I'll be glad we waited, rather than expend more than $5k for mkIIs and about another $5k for the supposed mkIIIs. Ten grand in the space of 3 years just for camera bodies is hard to justify unless there's a compelling reason for it. Yeah, it's only one or two weddings a year to pay for them, but, still that's five grand that won't be spent on other things, like upgrading to more fast primes, like the 85 f1.2, better computers to get work done faster, PShop 4 or 5, things like that.

I think the logic for waiting for an upgrade or not depends on what you are using now.

I decided to get the 5D mk2 when it first came out. My camera before that was a 40D though. I can understand if you had a 1D(s) series camera or the original 5D and decided to "skip" the 5D mk2 because the change wouldn't have been as significant as it was for someone like me.

However, the 5D cameras hold their value pretty well so when the mk3 does come out, I'm sure I'll be able to get 70% of what I paid for my camera originally and apply that on my 5D mk3

Already have two 1D III and a 5D II. I bought the 5D II only as a placeholder until the 1Ds IV arrives (2010? 2011?). Then, the toy-like 5D II will be properly demoted to backup.
The mode dial seems very toy-like to me. Anything twisty-turny can break. And I don't like that the mirror-up cancels after each shot instead of locking it up for many shots until I press the Set button. I'll take a 1 series instead.

Why not wait for the 5DIV or V, or VI or ........for ever. Then you can just wish and never buy. Think of all the money you can save. You see when the 5D III finally comes ouit it will be followed by the 5D IV and this will always go on. Now your 5DIII that you lusted for appears to be dated and suddenly no longer adequate. You will mke all the excuses to buy the new model. You get the picture; it's not your fault it's really a disease.

I don't have time in my life to wait for perfection - in automobiles, television sets, or cameras. I use the best that I can afford when I can afford it. The car I drive today is one heck of a lot better by all measures than my first car. BUT had I waited until today to buy my car I would have walked for decades. And I still do not have the perfect car - what are the odds of ever having that?

The rear LCD and associated features of the MKII was worth the upgrade to me, especially when working in a dark studio, thats before the whole new world of video was opened up & of course the IQ.

maybe its an age thing, waiting around for vapourware cameras when you can afford the current real thing is silly to me. You could end up being killed by an accident, or maybe the next lot of corrupt bankers will dissolve your pension money again.......and no MKIV.

I'm waiting for the 5Dmk3. I predict we'll have one in about a year, and this is what I'm hoping to see:

Digic V processor or variant
5-6 fps
24mp 16-bit RAW
12mp mRAW
6mp sRAW
HDR shooting mode
DEP shooting mode
ISO 12,800 (expandable to ISO 51,200)
Improved dynamic range throughout sensitivity range
19-point AF (7D AF feature set)
Pop-up flash (7D flash feature set)
Video Mode (7D video frame rates and feature set)
Enhanced video functionality (aka Magic Lantern)
Improved video performance (less rolling shutter, artifacting, etc.)
Availability: September 31, 2010
MSRP $2,895.00

One can dream, right? In the meantime, I'll continue shooting with my 7D and 1Dsmk1.

LOL. This is good one.
