If you could only buy one lens for your Canon T1i what would it be?

I did actually buy that combo last Sunday. Hmmm....apart from the 50mm f1.8u one that I got for free as a promotion, I would love to have any of the wide or ultra wides zooms. Not sure if they will come in the budget mentioned though !!
Which promotion offered the 50mm for free?

Look at your past shots and what focal lengths you usually went for. This is especially useful if you had a superzoom as your past camera. Usually my eye tends towards wide angle shots, so i know what lens I wanna get next.

I would get the 17-55. But this is not what I did a few years ago. My first purchase after the kit was the 70-200 f/4 IS, then a few more good lenses; and the 17-55 was the most recent one.

Good recommendation on the 55-250mm IS. I own one it does a decent job especially for its price range. I also own the Speedlite 430EX II. It is powerful for most occasions, perhaps except for occasions where you would already need a tripod for long exposure shot.
Assuming I was going to use a single lens for everything I would allocate my entire budget to the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM.

Alternatively, if I wanted something to complement the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (while maintaining the same budget) I would get the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM, and the Speedlite 430EX II.

Reasons:
1. The highest zoom coverage;
2. Quality more than good enough for a hobby
3. Below $1000
4. Vibration control (works well!)
5. Compact

I first tried it in urban conditions taking pictures of architecture. Very flexible - large angle for buildings, maximum zoom for fragments, like rooftops or distant objects. Always sits on my EOS 450D.

Why BOTH the Tamron 17-50 2.8 AND the Canon 50 1.8 lenses? Couldn't the Tammy almost cancel out the 50mm AND be much more versatile for other uses, too. I find it hard to understand why we buy the 50mm just because "it's such a good buy", then most of us let it collect dust on the shelf.

thanks. I know that's a good one but I always thought it was really expensive. I just looked it up and it's down to about $500 -$600 now. Wow. Not bad.

Sorry...didn't see the question until today. Here's in Singapore Canon was running a promo on most thier SLR's till 25th Nov wherein the 50 mm 1.8 was free (of course the camera had to bought at the listed price - so what they lost on lens they covered up on cash rebate :-)

The day after I bought it, the promo ended and they dropped the price by 100 SGD. So not sure if I got a good deal or not

Since my thing is wildlife and I like primes, I'd get the best telephoto I could get. My 300 is on my body more than any other lens I own.
