I'm a graduate student and I'm always carrying around large books and a laptop. I live in New York and use the subway. Which is why I hate carrying around excess clutter.

I wanted to know if anyone knew or could recommend something that was slim and low profile. Something where I can easily slip my camera into a messenger bag or school backpack. I'm not necessarily looking into getting a new bag. Perhaps just an insert that is protective and can take a bit of a beating. Also quickly being able to pull out or drop in would be a plus.

I only have a D90 with 18-200mm and 30mm f/1.8.

Have a look at lenscoat and optech op/tech for neoprene pouches ...between them there is one that includes body and lens. There are also wraps that you can use (optech I think) ....either of these is just what you are after.

Which one would you recommend more? The wrap or the neopene form fitting case as in over protection? I also found a promising 8" accessory pack made by Op/Tech on their website. However the accessory bag would require me to disassemble the camera in order for it to fit.

I sometimes use a soft nylon insulated kids zippered lunchbag inside a backpack. Don't see why it wouldn't work with a messenger type bag either. D 90/18-200 fits in fine with enough room for another lens.

Not a bad idea, I guess its better than what I'm doing now. I have some extra black foam which lines the inside of rifle cases and I cut it to fit my messenger bag. Not really compact but it keeps it snug and safe from abrasion.
