Just discovering the importance of good lighting. Was ready to spend most of the budget on the DC. Looking more closely and cutting back on the DC and growing the lighting budet.

Thanks...JL

Recently I was in the market for an basic flash meter and found myself looking at a Sekonic L-308B. Much to my suprise I found that Sekonic has a promotion going and offering the L-358 meter for the same price. How can one resist.... I feel that the L-358 is a good value at regular market value, and an excellent value at the promotional price. The meter itself is feature packed and easy to use, in my opinion a well designed unit. Optional Radio Triggering (with Pocket Wizard receivers) is available as well as spot metering accesories. For more details... http://www.sekonic.com/

Went to the site and there was no mention of the promotion. Too late?...

Check http://www.bhphotovideo.com . You may have to click on a button to get them to email a price to you. The L-358 was the same price as the Minolta IV-f when I bought one about a month ago, but the Sekonic has more features.

I think you're making a wise decision by considering both the camera and the lights together. The lights are FAR more important than the camera if portraiture is your intended use.

However, you didn't say how much you plan on spending so it's pretty hard to make specific recommendations.

I purchased my meter in Vancouver BC two weeks ago. At the time was told that this was a limited time offer, perhaps this is only being offered by Daymen, the distributor in Canada...

I went to the BH Photo link and had the price emailed to me and it was $219. Also the radio option has a special right now of $25. I ordered both even though I dont know what else I need for the radio piece. I looked at the pocket wizard stuff, but couldnt tell what I would need to fire the alien bees. I still have a lot to learn, but $25 from $149 regular price looked like something I shouldnt pass up.

Good move grabbing the PW module while it's so cheap. You can always sell it if you end up not using it. You'd need the PocketWizard Plus kit (one transmitter, one receiver) for your 'bees. The transmitter goes in the camera's hot shoe and the receiver attaches to one of the lights. No cords to trip over or work loose. Just great!

Hi Girish,

Nice talking to you the other day.

Take a look at this link: http://www.pocketwizard.com/

They make two models, the Plus and the Max. Most folks only need the Plus kit. That includes a transmitter and receiver. The reciever attaches to one of your lights. Additiion lights are triggered by their built-in slaves.

The transmitter goes in your hot shoe.

The big advantage of a wireless system is that there are no cords to trip over and no PC connectors to work loose. I pulled my EOS 3 with 28-135 lens attached off a table once when I tripped over the sync cord. Pretty scary moments but no real damage was done.

For location photography such as weddings, photographers often use a receiver on each light. That way only you can trigger your lights. The PW's have multiple channels so even if there were another photographer using a similar setup, you could use different channels.

I'm also learning the lighting aspect of photography. I bought the PocketWizard plus and I love it. I've only had it a couple weeks. It's well worth the money. I bought my strobe, light meter, pocketwizards and had them up and running within an hour after I got home. Now I just need to practice, practice, practice. :-)

On a budget I think this is the best value out there $239.00. I have one and it works great as long as you don't need the advanced features like multiple flash measurement.
