the ebay cheap chinese ones took some time but now it looks like they got it (rf602)

30bucks for a transmitter and a receiver and a camera trigger too that work as good as the PW and the cybersync.

Just for laughs - a factory worker in China earns between $65 to $200 - per MONTH.

A few audited reports from Pakistan claim that factory workers there earned about $77 per MONTH.

Recent reports by ThomasNet indicate that the average manufacturing wage in the USA is $54,000 a year - higher than the average U.S. salary.

At least a factory worker in the USA can afford a product built in the USA - can't say the same for India or China. But if the world keeps buying 'cheap' products based on a short-term vision, I expect that pretty soon there won't be any North American factory workers to buy American products anyway.

that most products use components made in china , the prices of a PW is now exposed for what it was: made in arrogance town and no competition country.

and 50 bucks for both the transmitter and receiver are more than enough.

time to get down to earth and face the exposure. here we're not talking about some 20% more , not even a 30% more, not even a 40% more , not even a 100% more

we all saw what greed means (lately) . like the millions as a bonus (with our money by the way) even after the company failed also because of them.

I got a kick out of the statements about having to pay those millions--one bank guy got, IIRC, 135 million bucks for leading his bank off a cliff--so these guys wouldn't go to the competition. Hell, I'd pay them to go to the competition!

It can do TTL via radio, only Canon now, Nikon will come later.

They do what they have to do, innovate, spend a lot on it and sell it for a premium until the chinese manufacturer figure out how to reverse engineer that as well. But it takes some time. (It might take years)

Yongnuo RF-602 is the first chinese 2,4Ghz transmitter, I got it and it works beautifully. But they never innovate, that is not their job. This is just how it works.

I personally have to wait for the chinese one, because I also live in a country where people make a lot less money, but I don't complain, the yongnou is perfect for me.

I don't want to compare PW (which is a small corporation, arrogant charging stratospheric prices (while they can) but still small) with the big balloons full of air of the latest bright examples in the money-investing and insurance companies ... millions go to the few, and then they laugh at the workers and lets make no mistake as they are good only because they found the way to get that kind of money for nothing (meaning that they are not good for what they get paid for, but just because they get paid )

and pure talented people like Gates and Jobs and others of that kind once they become big have to face (sooner or later) the drama of the politics and transform the talent into something else.

in the end 400 bucks for a product like the PW will go to the heads of the company, not to the workers.

and yes, they do it for the money of course (their money): no need to involve wages into this.

I just bought a chevy because I believe that the car is almost as good as the camry but it doesn't come for 400 times the price of a camry. If I did that then I'd call myself stupid more than patriotic.

that said when the heads of the auto industry went to Washington asking for money with their private jets ... no.. it didn't look good (to me). Again nothing to do with the wages but the stupidity of the big shots. Do I have to remind that they sell CARS?

PW did the R&D and came to the party early. You charge more for a unique product in the market place, one that is reliable for pro use. Anyone remember what it cost to upgrade from 4 MB RAM to 16 MB back in the day? Would cost a penny today. The Nikon Coolpix 950 (a whopping 2.1MP point-n-shoot) cost $1600 new in 1998 and was the darling of the digital world for a year or two...and so, what's the point here? That technology marches on and prices fall? Competition increases and prices fall?

I paid 6,200 USD for the first 1Ds because there was no alternative. Now many (the 101 sunday economists like you) did spread the same kind of BS about the R&D the FF sensor and other excuses and guess what? the 1DsIII still cost a lot of money, 7 years later.

that's not economics 101 for teens , that doesn't have much to do with the real value and all the BS of the R&D and stuff like that.

They want to make as much money they can. Period (that's reality 101)

I use few calumet radio in my studio and PW to rent for jobs outside or on location but I hear that the latest ones from china sync at a good speed, are very reliable and go to the distance easily.

look for rf-602 on any search engine and read the comments of the new owners. They look good.

If you think $600 for three is a lot - come to Canada where they're imported and go for $900 for three. Something you can't blame on Power Wizard manufactureres. Its actually the ridiculous policy of retailers here of doubling all expenses here, which in this case includes customs and duty.

Fortunately Montreal is a big city with a number of pro shops and LL Lozeau rents them.

I don't get it. Yes PWs are expensive, so if you don't like the price get the cheaper alternatives. If someone is a decent pro photographer, then recouping the cost for the PW or any equipment shouldn't be a major concern.

What people (especially amateurs or aspiring strobists) should really be lamenting about is why it took so long for less expensive yet reliable alternatives to come out-now that is a question worth exploring. Up until recently, the more reliable radio trigger systems were Pocket Wizards and Skyports (what I currently own).

IMO, I think this thread would have been more beneficial if this thread was about exploring the reasons why there were few alternatives. Was it due to patented technology? Poor marketing? Manufacturing technology to maintain certain quality control level not yet widely available? Conspiracy? (keep prices high to make it difficult for average Joe photographers from entering profession??). Other reasons?

Regardless, I really don't know, but would like to know why!

I was young and assisting when I was shooting a bronica and the amateurs were all excited with their hasselblads. I remember

of course there will always be the ones preaching the high price for the brand mania. but they don't really mean it. They too get down to earth when the moment to pay comes .. believe me.

the funny thing is that the marketing people know very well that the time to charge for the brand is almost over and the "preachers" don't really count 'cause all the others won't fall for it anymore.

This new system seems to be very similar to the PW, for a fraction of the cost....well it was fast...
