What would buy 50D with great Lens or 7D?

Ok.

I have now worked out - thanks to this forum - now I am tossing up between a 50D with great lens or a 7D with standard quality lenses.

I have no other decent lenses - so either way I need to make a purchase of a lens. But a 50D with great lens costs as much as a 7D with standard lens.

This is what I need the camera for:

Portraits
Product shots

Wedding photography (I want to get into this, and I am hanging aroung a wedding photogrpahy as candid camera person for now) so low light shooting is a must.
I also take product pics and blow them up to banner size (for work)

I would appreciate your feedback on this. If there is any other camera you recomend - I appreciate the advice.

I was facing the same dilemma and opted for a 70-200mm FL4 is.
Your low light requirements- the 17-55mm might be in order.

I think this will depend what you're planning to shoot. For general use go for the 50D and better lens every time. If your requirements are more specific and for example your standard quality lens is an 85 1.8 for indoor sport then there will be advantages to the 7D.

I you choose lenses wisely some of Canons upper comsumer grade lenses are very good. OTOH the main advantages of the 7D over the 50D are more capable AF, higher frame rate and weather sealing which are only required for specific tasks.

A few years down the line the 7D will be looking dated while a good L lens will still deliver.

Invest your money in quality lenses, they make the difference.

Good lens last multiple bodies and hold their value much better. Also, you'll see a difference in image quality more with a good lens than a body that only has a year more technology. Especially with the photography you say you are doing, I'd go with the 50D and better lens.

If you already haven't, buy one of the external flashes for you camera.. Not for the flash necessarily, but for the focus assist lighting it has.. You can disable flash and use the focus light on the flash.. I have used this trick for low lighting situations that would normally cause my 40D to hunt..
