In such good lighting most cameras would do well at ISO 1600 anyway. There was no need to shoot at ISO 1600 here, was there?

No...I had the cam on ISO1600 in error...BUT, if I were shooting a sports event, I was able to get a shutter speed of over 1/1250 s.....with reasonable detail......I am used to fixed lens cameras and I would say this was good...... remember, this is a camera that cost £329.00 with a lens....seems pretty good to me.....actually I will be completely honest, it outperforms my A700 for JPEG quality at the moment (I am still trying to get really good JPEGs from the A700....they are good, but the A330 is better)

Not bad at all. Actually, I used ISO1600 with my A300 pretty much without fear - it had some noise, but nothing really detrimental, and could still produce lovely color tones, detail, and saturation. ISO3200 was pushing it for sure, but ISo1600 wasn't bad.

That said, the A550 at ISO1600 isn't even trying yet, and ISO3200 looks cleaner than A300 did at 1600. Sony's really worked out the jpeg processing quite a bit lately - it was decent in the A300, from what you say quite good in the A330...and now from my experience downright great in the A500/550. And not just the high ISOs...detail, color, and sharpness at low ISOs is nicely improved too.

Good to see progress in processing and sensor development from all the manufacturers, as the latest batches of cameras each has debuted has really raised the game.

I think the jpegs are better than ever....so I am almost certain that I am swapping my A700 for an A500, as I really like the speed of the A700, and also the A330 is not really suited to big lenses as the handling suffers

I love the A330, but you need a light compact lens....I have a series of sports events to shoot, and will use either the 18-250 or a 70-300, I think the A500 will be great for that

Agreed. Any modern DSLR will shoot ISO1600 in bright daylight, but why would you want or need to. Pointless post. The images are also to noisy to use for anything anyway.
Not exactly pointless is it....ignore the ISO 1600 image then....are you saying that posting the other images was pointless.....I think they are rather pleasant shots if nothing else.....why do you guys have to be so argumentative.....my last post here....you can all get stuffed

Every time I post a constructive or vaguely optiomistic message here....several people have to be a clever smartarse know it all
This was my final post on Sony SLR forum....Goodbye

As vaughanbb mentioned, you might need it for sporting event that require fast shutter speed. It wasn't pintless post. The images are usable and good enough for ISO 1600.

Don't let dougas get to you. He has a beef against A330, and he has done this to your threads several times before. If you leave because of him, that will mean he succeeded. Your posts have shown that A330 is very capable camea, and that's what dougas hates. Why let him suceed by leaving? There many here who enjoyed your posts. Keep posting. Post more. Post often, and never let morons like dougas get under your skin. I love your posts.

Sorry guys, but I really cant be bothered to waste time contributing to this forum, I wouldnt mind if the snide remaks were occasional....but its all the time.....even when I post really good images (not saying these were anything special btw).....several people just have to argue and dig away....why ????.....I have only just returned to this forum after a break of two years.....but it really isnt worth the effort

Thanks.....I shoot every day....dozens and dozens of images, 7 days a week....I hoped that I have something to contribute.....but there are just so many ?@ssholes here that yes it does bug me and I wonder whats the point .....I will give it a break and post after Dec 10 when I have shot my next sports event....thanks for the nice comments

Before I started posting A330 images on this forum...it was accepted wisdom that the A230/330 cameras were terrible heaps of junk.....that I hope I have proved is completely false.....actually I havent seen a single "the A230 is the worst cam in the world" type posts recently.....because it is BS and always was.....I think I have plenty to contribute...but seriously, I cant be bothered with all the bitching....so I will leave for a while...lifes too short to argue with these people

Vaughan, you've got some great pictures there. Great examples for others to strive for. Any of Sony's entry level slrs can take good pictures, even without certain features that former models had. It just seems some here on this forum can't or don't want to believe it.

Vaughan,

make sure you handle the A700 and the A500 side-by side before you make your move.

Agreed. I'll assume the A5XX is similar to the A100 in size weight. I find the A700 much nicer to use with big lenses (and in general) to the A100.

try these same shots at night, and see if you are still happy with iso 1600. They do look good, but they are in daylight.

That's actually a pretty usable limit for these cams, I think personally. I never hesitated to use ISO1600 on my A300...but ISO3200 was strictly emergencies. I think Vaughan might still be happy with the A330 even at night at ISO1600. Here's a few I thought weren't too bad at all at 1600 in low light:

All handheld (I guess that's obvious...if I could have used a tripod I wouldn't have needed ISO1600!). All taken directly in JPEG mode.

The A330 might even be a little better - depends on if they did improve the JPEG processing.

I have posted before that I was glad you were posting your A330 images and showing that is was actually a good camera. Personally, I love my A200 and have yet to find the justification to upgrade. Too many on this forum spend their efforts basing the products rather than learning how to use them. I was beginning to wonder if anyone actually owned an A230 or A330 camera. Nobody but you seems to use and post with that series. Perhaps you should do some posting in the beginners forum to show some prospective DSLR buyers that Sony is a viable option to Canon and Nikon.

Keep up the good work.

Your posts have been some of the bright spots of late. It would be a shame to lose them.

You have show what nice images the A330 is capable of producing. The grip doesn't work for me and I would be missing too many features but you have shown you can't argue too much over the IQ. It is also nice to here you compare and contrast the A330 and the A700. Please keep posting and use the ignore button liberally if you have to :)

I for one find your images refreshing. I actually look to see if you have posted anything new when I log in.

I remember your images under the name Kodakuser and missed your posts.

Please continue to post and use the ignore function on those who can not appreciate the fact that you actually photograph things and post them on a photo forum.

I also think you should become a regular over on Dyxum
