Canon Powershot G3

hey! yes! how come? i juz visited the page 4hours ago........what's wrong wif the website?

I had hoped for more than just a 4x zoom improvement. Maybe Canon
will surprise us all with an updated Pro90 (100?) with 5 or 6 MP's?
The Pro90 with its 10x zoom and swivel LCD is great, but it is
outdated with only 2.6 MP. Canon, where are you??
The cat's already out of the bag. There are three new Canon non-SLR digicams, the Ixus V3, the G3, and the S45, to be introduced at Photokina. You can keep dreaming, I suppose, but I'm betting that the G3 will have a few nice surprises inside.

-Several reasons might be responsible for the disappearance of the website. Yesterday I asked my local photo-dealer, usually very well informed, and he stated definitely that he had information the forthcoming G3 would have 5 Megapixels. I personally believe that the pic on the Lambertin-Website was in no way authorized and may be tampered on and the real G3 will be slightly different ( c´mon, 4 MB for Canon is just a joke, isn´t it?).

-It´s exactly as I thought: I just called the Lambertin sop and frankly asked for the reasons of the disappearance andthey answered to have been advised by CANON, since they had a big surprise for the G3. On my further inverstigation they admitted that this surprise would be mor Megapixels.
So....let´s wait and see!

If those are the limitations of the EVF, then yes, an optical view-finder is preferred. Looking through the view-finder of the G2 under fleeting light a few days ago, I was very happy with how clear everything looked especially when compared to the view on the LCD. Unfortunately, the area covered by the VF is woefully inadequate to the actual captured frame.
An optical viewfinder is far superior to an EVF. First, optical is
as "real time" as it gets. With EVFs there is always a delay
between what you see and what you get. Second, EVFs, even the new
generation, are worthless in low light. Try framing a shot when
both your LCD and EVF are black. Finally, the ability to focus
with an EVF is very limited compared to a camera with an optical
viewfinder.

If EVFs were the answer, the D60 or D120 would surely have them.

EVF is simply a compromise technology that allows consumer level
cameras to have a long range zoom lens. I would rather have an
optical viewfinder and use a teleconverter attachment for the extra
zoom.

That is still true but the latest ones make this a non-issue for many.

This is clearly not true. Ever looked through a D7i in low light? It goes black and white and gives you an image which you can see when, if you were looking through an optical viewfinde,r you would just get a dim useless view.
Try framing a shot when
both your LCD and EVF are black.
Try framing a shot in an optical viewfinder when the D7i's view finder is helping you out in low light. The EVF is actually more capable.
Finally, the ability to focus
with an EVF is very limited compared to a camera with an optical
viewfinder.
Eh? You can manual focus in a G2 optical viewfinder? Don't think so.

In a DSLR, yes you can focus but modern EVF magnify the image to let you get fine manual focus and also as described above can give you superior low light focusing.

All in all the modern EVF actually has advantages in these areas.
If EVFs were the answer, the D60 or D120 would surely have them.
Rubbish. The D60 is based on 35mm SLR technology. Why therefore would it have an EVF? The "correct" way to do it is like the Oly E10/20 where not only do you get an optical SLR view but the LCD can be used as well.
EVF is simply a compromise technology that allows consumer level
cameras to have a long range zoom lens. I would rather have an
optical viewfinder and use a teleconverter attachment for the extra
zoom.
It's not a compromise technology at all and has its own merits. They may help with long range zooms but they also bring extra functionality to the table.

Where, for example is the live real-time histogram in a D60 viewfinder?

There is one in a D7i viewfinder.

Dam, dam dam dam (can I say that here?). I wish you hadn't told me the surprise! I would have like at least a day to think it might be a 28mm or wider lens.

We will have to agree to disagree on the merits of the EVF vs. optical viewfinder.

I do find it interesting that you say " The 'correct' way to do it is like the Oly
E10/20 where not only do you get an optical SLR view but the LCD

can be used as well." I couldn't agree with you more! The Oly has the best of both technologies: an optical viewfinder and a LCD screen. The split beam system would allow the use of an EVF on the Oly SLR, but it is noticably absent.
The use of an EVF is dictated by the zoom range of consumer level cameras. It is required, not desired. That said, many of the features and functions of cameras are a matter of personal preference. If you like EVF based cameras great. I don't, at least not yet.

Well... if that's the case... doesn't that prove that the pic on that website was a manipulated image, since it said 4.0 mp on the camera itself?

Just because someone tells you what the surprise is, doesn't mean that will be the real surprise, does it?

Or just get a bargain G2? I want to buy a Gx in November and have some questions:

1) Is the G3 going to be more pricey than the current G2 Prices? if so how much do you estimate it to be (upon previous G1 to G2 release experience)?

2) Is the G3 worth paying this extra price for or just grab a bargain G2?

3) Any Aussies here? if so what is the likelyhood of Australian retailers ability to order the G3 when it does come out in November?

Thanks!

In Australia, I would contact CameraStore or Digicamera and ask about availability. It may take a while for G3 to get down here.

I had very good experiences with both stores in the past, but Digicamera offers better prices lately.

Would it be a G3 (logical upgrade of G2) if it didn't have 5 MP? i meant g1 had 3, g2 had 4, g3 has 5. That's logical isn't it?

fingers crossed

I can't be able to get into the link, don't know why ?
Can anyone post it into the depreview ?

Thanks !
