If I buy a D700 from B&H, I have 30 days to return it, in the box etc., etc., for a full refund. If I buy from Amazon and decide the D700 is not what I want, is the refund diminshed? It would appear so but I am finding the Amazon site a bit reluctant to come right out and say it. I ask in the event the camera has issues like 37,000 shutter actuations other than that, this amazing camera really does fit my needs, my desires, my ability in the future or after life. My Canon Rebel is not useable anymore. I will indeed miss the plethora of Canon lenses available, there is no doubt Canon has Nikon beat on lenses. I have my faith Nikon will respond. Other than the Nikon 50mm, my next lens will be the 70-200 VRII....

Must be trolling? If not, why waste B&H's time and ours trying to return a camera you aren't sure you want. This is irresponsible and costs B&H money to deal with you.

... I went out and rented one.

A lot more honest then buying to return.

OK, let me rephrase it as obviously you read it thinking my intentions were nothing but for the worst. As one who is trying to understand the return policy of Amazon and has read here that some folks have received their camera with X number of shutter actuations (thus the comment about the 37,000 clicks) and I decide that that is not what I want, can I return it to Amazon without receiveing only 85% of its value? The same would apply to B&H. If the B&H policy is that you get 200 clicks, thats fine as long as its from the total already on the camera plus 200. Thanks, your frindly troller as identified by Micor32, Supreme troller recognizer....

Trying and then returning something is just plain wrong. All that does is force some poor soul to end up with what is a used camera.

Rent, as has been aptly suggested.

Karma is an extremely unforgiving mistress..............

I whole heartedly agree about the renting (not the Karma issue). Really to sum it up, if minutes after receiving a camera from Amazon that is "used" can I return it for a full refund? Really that should have been my post but I wanted to see if the expert troller recognizer was in full action tonight. He is and still misunderstanding of what a troller really is.

The benefit of buying with Amazon is that you can ultimately get satisfaction from Amazon if something goes wrong. You might have to escalate your issue, if you have one, but Amazon will make things right. I have done a lot of business with Amazon over the years, including buying my D700 via Amazon. I have always been satisfied in the end, but rarely things have gotten mucked up along the way.

Is that true?? I had no idea (Amazon or B&H) will resell a slightly used (returned) camera as a new one. I thought they'd specifically state it as being used or refurbished if it was. If I got the camera and after the first shot it had more than 1 on the shutter count, I'd immediately return it (actually, I've done that already).

Customer aside (and call me picky), I think it's unethical/unmoral for a company to sell a used/returned/tested (whatever you'd like to call it) camera as brand new. Just out of curiosity, has they happened to anyone?

Amazon has a 30 day return policy.

You've been trolled again, son. No, B&H doesn't sell used cameras as new. The person starting this thread had full intentions of leading us down this road. Don't go there.

Personally I always recommend Amazon over B&H because their return policy is more forgiving. Once I had an issue with a D700 and couldn't return it to B&H because I had more than 200 clicks. And they are very strict about it. Another time I had an issue with a 40D and could return it to Amazon well after the 30 days, they were very cool about it.

I don't think either would try to sell you a used camera as new.

Go with Amazon, I highly recommend it.

you might try signing up for CASHBACKLIVE and save some money. I just bought a 24-70 f/2.8 lens from Adorama through E-Bay. List price was $1799.95 on E-bay with Adorama as the seller which was about the lowest price I could find from any fairly trustable vendor. With CASHBACKLIVE I will get a check for $144 in about 90 days time. I imagine you might be able to find a similar deal using cashback live and E-bay. The perecentage back from the E-bay route is 8%. You can also use CASHBACKLIVE and buy from B&H and you would get 3% back on your purchase.

Just an idea. Has nothing to do with returning the merchandise but would save you some $$$

At least B&H does: I remember a thread dealing with that issue (which was deleted by dpreview - they must have a reason to support such dealers...) where a number of people reported they got (slightly) used cameras from B&H. And henryp of B&H didn't answer to the simple, multiple times repeated question "Does B&H sell returned and used merchandise as new?" although he participated in the thread...

So it's clear B&H does sell returned and used merchandise as new - I don't know what the laws in NY say to that, but in my opinion a dealer who sells returned and used merchandise as new is simply a criminal.

I don't know about adorama and the others - anyone?

C'mon, I very well remember a thread dealing with that issue where a number of people reported they got (slightly) used cameras from B&H. And henryp of B&H didn't answer to the simple, multiple times repeated question "Does B&H sell returned and used merchandise as new?" although he participated in the thread...

So it's clear B&H does sell returned and used merchandise as new as it would have been very easy to simply state: "No, we at B&H do not sell returned and used equiopment as 'new'."

I don't know what the laws in NY say to that, but in my opinion a dealer who sells returned and used merchandise as new is simply a criminal.

I don't know about adorama and the others - anyone? (and personally I fear to sell returned and used photo equipment as "new" is not so uncommon...)

I think you should make up your mind before ordering if the D700 is the right camera for you - "testing" it and then returning for a full refund is unfair to the seller as a honest seller then has to sell the used camera with a rebate. As others already said, rent it for a couple of days to test if it's what you want!

I bought my D700 from B&H about 2 months ago. I asked the sales person on the phone...."do you sell cameras that are returned, w/o any issues, as new". His response was......"No - we never do that".

Prior to that I ased the sales person at Roberts Imaging the same question. His response was...."Yes we do".

I went with B&H. You would think that these cameras (or any equip) would be sold as "open box"...with a small discount over new. They all have to get many returns......and I don't see a lot of "open box" sales.

I think I was just getting an honest answer from Roberts Img...!!

So don't I - that's why I wrote "...(and personally I fear to sell returned and used photo equipment as "new" is not so uncommon...) "

I have never had any issues with B&H nor with things items purchased from Amazon. I have been happy with both companies. I did return a Canon 70-200mm IS lens from B&H simply because I was a bit overwhelmed at the size of it. My mistake, I should have driven to a Canon dealer and checked it out. I do remember that the lens was "used" or Canon is shipping them with finger prints but that was not my reason for returning, the product was fine, I was stupid and learned from that. Perhaps my fear has gotten the worst of me but I can picture a Nikon D700 arriving and having XX number of shutter clicks and me then wondering who did them and why it was passed along. Pretty simple really. B&H will take it back but I was not sure of Amazon, I hunted on their website for the return policy but it does vary with the type of item you purchase. Thanks for the responses, well except that of the master troll sniffer, he should get a job here, we'd all be trolls by his definition. Keep up the good work Micro32!
