11.1 MP Canon and other news...

Perhaps of more interest to people on this forum is the 3.2 mp IXUS v3. I might have considered this instead of the S30.

I've been telling people that I won't replace my S30 until there is a 12 mp equivalent. I figure that twice as many pixels in each dimension will be a worthwhile upgrade. I was assuming that it would be about five years away. But maybe it will be sooner if the high end is already (almost) there.

Out of interest, Chris, is the number of megapixels the only factor that will make you upgrade? For example, if Canon came out with an updated version of (say) the S30 with "only" 5 mp but a ton of other features would you hold until you could get mp's into double figures?

It's just my opinion but I think mp's is overrated as an indicator of a camera's value. Just one of many factors...

Thanks, Mark

kodak has 4mp with the same price as of canons 2mp but there is no power on earth that will make me choose kodak over canon.

I would be glad to find that the G3 is better built (metal body), with better performance (being able to snap shots like a traditional camera) and with some improvements to already excellent onboard image processing even if it is still "only" 4 megapixels.

Bringing image quality of the G2 to the table with faster all around response time would be good enough for me. (but the overall market may expect more overall - pixels, that is).

Theo

Agreed. I think that the mp number is the "tabloid" number (the one that gets the headlines) but the more enlightened amongst us realize that it's just one small factor towards what makes a camera a great camera. Whenever I upgrade I look for a lot more than just the number of megapixels.

Thanks
