What will Sony announce at PhotoKina?

Personally, I'm quite happy with 4 megapixel images. What I'm NOT happy about is an autofocus system that can't compete with a $50 point and shoot camera ni terms of speed, accuracy, and low-light performance.

On the high-end, the F-series cameras have a great set of features, but they're just too big, bulky, and awkwardly shaped for many people, including myself.

What I'd REALLY like to see is a completely redesigned successor to the S85, with a more compact, ergonomically shapped body (like the Coolpix 5000), a flip/twist LCD, and FAST autofocus and shutter performance.

Is it just me, or is Sony morphing into a Microsoft-like, arrogant behemoth, abusing their market power to ignore customers' wishes and push overpriced and inferior technologies?

Hey there, Walter. How's it going these days?

I see you're still angry with Sony. :-)

If Sony doesn't have what you want, maybe someone else has. If no one has it, maybe it's not as easy to provide as you might thnk. I'd like something like a Lexus 430, but with the carrying capacity of my van and which drives like a corvette, but of course at a Civic price. Think maybe it's just aruond the corner?

Lot's of folks would probably wish for that.

It's definitely THAT. Looks a little tiny.

Phil said it was comfortable. Personally, I didn't care for the feel of it. I guess it's subjective. Lots of F-series users don't care for the square camera form factor. But then S-series users find the F-series too akward and bulky, like yourself.

Hmm... sounds to me as if you really want a G2 or a 5000 with better autofocus.

The $50 cams probably has such a good focus because they don’t focus at all; they simply have a small aperture, allowing to focus from 1meter to infinite.
Good low light performance (?) – those cameras are the worse there is!

That was nice! :)

No, didn't forget. I just remember that this is Sony Japan running the show. :)

They're kind of goofy like that sometimes.

Shoot, if it was Sony USA calling the shots on this kind of stuff, we'd probably have a nice show across the river at the Javits Center a couple times a year. Hahahah...
U, you forgot where Sony USA HQ is located ... ;p

Actually, interesting point you brought up. Sony Japan and Sony USA may sell the same products, Sony USA actually do not listen to Sony Japan when it comes to the USA market. They make their own decisions here.

As for Javits, its possible. But they may still tag along with the larger shows like PC Expos and such just to make sure they have the attendance.

With some products, Sony USA is more autonomous. But with digital imaging, it's Sony Japan pretty much all the way down the line.

Did you catch Zip's posts about that? The fear at all of these shows is that big name players will continue to drop out. Maybe not at PC Expo specifically (huge show), but at most of them, a company like Sony can afford to say, "why pay all the fees for attendance and for renting floorspace, when we could do the whole thing ourselves? They certainly have enough product to support their own shows without needing anyone else.

It will be interesting to see it play out. I hope that they don't drop out of the larger shows altogether. Exposure is how they get their name into the public mind regarding digital imaging to begin with.

Yeah, I did ... I was at the show (Comdex I believe) when IBM first did this a few years back. They sort of dropped out but didnt dropped out. They werent part of the main show's exhibitor, but they had that upper floor of the Javits center to themselves. You know, like with PC Expos, the main floor is the Expo, but there is always another show in the basement.

Actually I would like to see Sony do this but still tag along with the major shows. Reason being is they do have a lot more product then IBM or Dell and other companies. So it would be nice to be albe to see all of Sony's line at one show.

Not unlike my feelings about Microsoft, I have a love/hate relationship with Sony. And like with Microsoft, that relationship leans more towards the hate side every day.

I like Sony products, and I own quite a few of them. But that doesn't make up for their arrogant attitude towards their customers.

inferior????

examples please
Memory Stick - Decent basic design, but not with capacities trailing far behind CF and others. And it's quite obvious they're overpriced. It's clear that they expect customers to buy several 128MB MS instead of a single 512MB or 1GB card, as they can with CF.

MiniDisc - Great idea 10 years ago, but now? Maybe if they'd made a real effort to publish more music in this format earlier on instead of expecting customers to buy a $500 player that can only play Michael Jackson and New Kids on the Block music. Who wants to invest in a proprietary recording format that costs far more than CDs while offering about the same storage capacity? If they wanted this to become successful with music lovers, they should have offered PC links years ago instead of months ago, and they should provide software to automatically copy titles and ID3 tag data instead of requiring the user to input manually using their moronic Jog Dial.

Is it just me, or is Sony morphing into a Microsoft-like, arrogant

and push overpriced and inferior technologies?
LOL, I have to disagree with you ... Sony isnt know for inferior
technologies and crappy products like MS is.
And what do you call the Memory Stick.

Besides, I was talking about their ruthless and insensitive business practices, and their disregard for customers' concerns and needs, not specifically the quality of their products.

You're being an idiot. I'm not asking for anything that's not already feasible.

The Sony F-series cameras already have nearly acceptable autofocus performance, which could be improved if the zoom lens wasn't so big.

The Sony S- and F-series already provide outstanding battery life.

The Canon G2 and the Nikon Coolpic 5000s already have flip out rear LCD panels, which if I'm not mistaken, Sony used to offer on an older model. (The problem here is that Sony thinks that the sole purpose swiveling LCDs is to avoid glare in sunlight, when in fact this is a useful tool for composing shots from sifferent angles.

The Coolpix 5000 already offers wonderful build quality and finish, combined with superb ergonomic body design.

Just take the S85, reshape it to a less boxy, more ball-like shape, incorporate a Nikon-style comfortable grip, emphazie autofocus performance over zoom range, and add a swiveling LCD display. The resulting camera would steal quite a few sales from Canon and Nikon.
