Weekly Macro/Close-up thread for 15 November 2009

Great shots. The colours are amazing. For me, #2 does the trick.

As for Flickr, I moderate on one of the macro groups and sometimes want to reject photos I don't think are up to scratch. When you open them up and see pages and pages of comments praising the shot you start to wonder. On the other hand, some great shots get hardly any recognition at all. If you post a few shots at once, people seem to want to comment on the one shot that already has lots of comments. So don't feel too bad about the others, they're all good.

I know what you mean with the MP-E. With the weight of the lens plus camera plus flash the high speed flash is essential , especially hand held. Trouble is, I'm seeing a lot of robberflies with prey or other insects perched on the end of a twig or leaf with no background. The shot looks great in real life or through the viewfinder but loses something with the black background after exposure. I've tried wider appertures with slower shutter speeds but still not sharp enough. Hate to go above ISO200 with the 50D. My 70-200 with tubes and lens set at F8 gives a good result but I lose out on magnification. I'll keep at it.

Here's a few from the last few weeks. Didn't realise how quickly one could lose the feel with the mpe-65

Moth x5

Weevil series

x1 Weevil in a nutshell

Weevil making a run for it ~ x3

Weevil coming to a dead end - unfortunately I clipped the antennae (grrrr...) was thinking of correcting it in PSE but ran out of patience!

Spider series

This little guy was nervous but sure as hell he wasn't going to give up his lunch....

Great shots Chris. They're all excellent! Also, as an aside, the public can be very fickle IMHO. Your best feedback is from the peers you respect ...all other praise is nice but don't get carried away with the positive or lack or positive comments!!

The spiders are good Fabian but no. 4 and 5 are my favourites. In fact, I think the hover fly would look even better with a black border to give it a little space to breathe. Would love to see it reposted with the border!

I clipped the weevil's antennae(!) which really ruins the photo for me :( Once you notice these things, one kind of fixates on the imperfections until that's all you can see!
