I'm looking to buy a new camera (my first digital one), and the only non-SLR one I can find with a manual zoom ring is the Dimage. Is this really possible ??

SLR's exceed my budget, so they are out of the question. If possible, I want a good zoom, at least 6X and a resolution of minimum 4mp.

Any tip's will be most appreciated.

The D7,D7i,D7Hi series will satisfy and exceed your requirement.

Yes, it's possible. Astonishing, isn't it?

If you also want good wide angle and excellent manual controls, the D7(H)(i) series is what you're looking for.

I think so. The Sony 717 has a combo zoom/focus ring, but that's "fly by wire".

Well, the D7(H)i would seem to fit your bill. They do have a bit of a learning curve, though. Note that Canon has announced a D-SLR that will sell for ca $1000, so if you really want an SLR and especially if you have Canon glass, that might be worth considering.

Do you also know when this camera is supposed to be released, or what the full name is ??

See the other message; looks like this may not be solid data after all.

It was mentioned in the Canon press release on the D120 that was dated Sept. 24th and accidentially ended up on their website for half an hour. Check the threads for the D120 article. The slip up was also printed in PC magazine online I believe. It just briefly mentioned an EOS based slr for around $1000. There were no specs on it. I'm only about 50% sure on the D120 and EOS-- it's very early and my brain is struggling to remember what I read last night.

Is there an official Canon announcement regarding that?
I saw this in the Canon forum...

I mean I'm only 50% sure I got the model names correct- I'm sure I read about a cheap dslr to be announced right before photokina and a 11 or 12mp D-whatever by Canon.

Ok had coffee-- let me get back on track: EOS 1D is the big boy and the EOS 300V is the little guy. Here's the link:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,528206,00.asp

There's been some confusion I guess as the release stated the $1000 camera is a "film-based digital SLR"-- what the heck is that! Last I checked- I enjoyed not putting film in my digital camera::

What PC Mag says:

"In addition to offering a resolution of 11.1 million pixels—today's leading digital SLRs afford half as many pixels—the EOS 1Ds will, according to industry sources, accommodate existing 35mm lenses without a change in effective focal length. The camera will likely sell for around $6,000.

The release mentioned a new film-based digital SLR known as the EOS 300V, also due for unveiling at Photokina.. According to Westfall, this model is identical to the Canon Rebel Ti, which was announced in the States on August 27. Canon expects that this camera, likely to be priced at an astoundingly low $1000, will "become the world's number-one selling SLR camera." "

From what I can tell the "digital" 300V for $1000 is known as the Rebel Ti in the US and it's already availible and it's a film camera. That CMOS chip is for the autofocus. But obvuously- what do I know?
