Free software for processing T1i video?

Hello, can anyone tell me what free software will work for converting T1i videos to a lower file size easily without too much loss of quality. Just like what you see with T1i videos after they have been uploaded to flickr - they still look fine but are much smaller file size than the very large originals. I don't necessarily need to edit them, but I basically want to convert them to a size appropriate for uploading/downloading or for playing on my older laptop that is too slow to play them straight out of the camera. (If the software can do basic editing as well that would be a bonus.)

I know there are all kinds of video conversion software programs, some can get very technical. I want one which keeps it pretty simple and which people have experience that it handles well the video files from the T1i with no audio synch issues and uses the right codec.

Thanks!

I know of plenty of Free software for converting & editing the 480P video but unfortunately have no clues if any exist for converting the 1080p or 720P HD Canon format

to play thru windows media player or be able to burn to a DVD disc for playing thru a blue-ray player on your HDTV.

Hope someone can chime in !

A nice open source linear video editor which is up to the task is avidemux.
Here you go: http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Linear video editor means it can do basic editing and apply various filters (resize, sharp, denoise etc). Just load your video and on the left bar set video to mpeg-4 and press configure to configure the codec. For the format you can choose the widely used avi or the more advanced mp4 among other choices. If you want you can encode the sound too to a more space-effective format as mp3.

For advanced editing you can turn to Linux and kdenlive which is a non linear video editor working flawsllesly with T1i’s videos. This is the website of this app: http://www.kdenlive.org/

I already use the program below called " Convert MOV to AVI " which essentially unwraps the MOV container around the MOV video clip converting it to mpeg4 format and also reduces the ridiculous QT format size by two-thirds without reducing the resolution or video quality at all.

Then i run this converted file thru Avidemux for editing and making sure the audio & video stays in sync.

But the above two programs i use for 480P video so our question is what free software can convert HD 720p video and edit HD content without changing it from HD material in the widescreen format?

Both the programs I mentioned (avidemux and kdenlive) can edit and re-encode HD material withouth changing it’s resolution or framerate. Of course they can convert it to every format you want (including 1080p at 24, 25, 29.97, 30fps). Kdenlive even has almost realtime preview of the various effects without the need for exotic CPUs (it does that on my 2 year old laptop). You can load to them T1i’s videos without any prior conversion.

Try Handbrake. Seems flexible, fairly fast and free and not too complex with confusing settings. I find video to be a confusing mess of file formats, compression types, etc. Doesn't matter if you just play from the camera, but try playing through another device to a HD tv and who knows if the video and audio will play properly. No wonder only about 5% (magazine survey) work with video on their computer compared to 50+ % with still pics.

After you convert the video clips & edit them making sure the HD content stays intact in the widescreen format then what program can you use to burn them to a DVD disc to play in a blu-ray player on your HDTV ?

After using the above mentioned programs for converting & performing editing while still retaining the HD widescreen format intact @ 720p what software can be used to then burn the video clip on a DVD+R disc for viewing on a Blu-ray player hooked-up to your HDTV set?

Sorry but I don’t know. I don’t own a blu-ray player so I just connect my laptop through HDMI to my HDTV.

I don't think you can play blu-ray video from a DVD disc. You need a special blu-ray disc player and blu-ray discs. You can store HD files on a DVD but they will have to be transfered to your computer for playing.

Ron, I see several threads with you recommending Avidemux. I shoot t2i videos with sound off, but want to add a soundtrack. It appears this program does this, but all I get is choppy/stuttering odd sounds (video looks fine). I'm trying it with a 10 second video, and a 3 minute MP3. Won't it just sync the 1st 10 seconds of sound to the video? Or do I need to edit the audio to the same length? It's easy to edit the video, but there doesn't seem to be a nice way to cut and paste the audio. Suggestions?

Just tried Windows Movie Maker, won't take .MOV files. When I import an AVI file (that looks fine in Avidemux), all I see is a black screen. Hit play and all black frames. It does look like it edits audio much easier.

I'd give Handbrake a try if you just want to convert to a smaller file. It took the movie files from my T1i and downsized them from my iPod just fine.

Thanks, I'll look at it closer when I get home. I'd never opened Movie Maker until yesterday (came on my Dell I bought 2 years ago). My guess is it's an OLD version. It did not have .mov as an import option.

OK, everything I've Googled says it won't import .mov files. "The accepted formats for import are .WMV/.ASF, .MPG (MPEG-1), .AVI (DV-AVI), .WMA, .WAV, and .MP3.". I have version 5.1 SP3. Although it was an .avi file I tried that gave me black screen.
