Hi Forum'ers,

http://www.pbase.com/jcarruthers/090902

Im telling you people, if you ever go even a couple of hundred miles away from this place, make a detour and get snapping!

If I lived there, I'd never leave this place!

Hi Ben,
Impressive shots James!
Thanks Ben. Its all too easy though! The photo's don't do it justice at all. Every 10 metres there is a photo opportunity - and then when you backtrack on yourself there are even more! (Im back in Canada now, so metric is ok - although really I should also write this bilingually in French too)
I didn't realize that Watkins Glenn was this beautiful. I ,like
you, thought Watkins Glenn only had a race track. Glad you posted
your shots.
The whole region is amazing. There is a very hilly & picturesque town of Ithica (sp?) nearby - which has a Uni, wish I could have got some shots of that - but we were just passing through.
What's next on your itinerary?
There is a huge British car show in Bronte Creek, near Toronto, then south to Niagara Falls. Im in photographers paradise...

And my 602 is taking this all in its stride, havent even once been tempted to get out the T90 and shoot some "real" film!

James,

Great shots. I'm sure you took lots more than you posted on Pbase. Like you said, at every turn, there is something new to shoot.
Did you walk up and down the gorge or just down?

I was there in July for the Finger Lakes Wine Festival (on the grounds of the speedway) but was unable to find the time to get inside the gorge. By the time we got there it was dusk and the park was closing. I purposly brought my Fuji with me to take shots of the gorge. I was disappointed.
I'll have to wait until next year's Wine Fest to get another chance.

Cassandra,

Sorry if I'm budding in.

The last time I was there, you could drive your car to the TOP of the gorge and take it easy as you walk DOWN all the steps. There are thousands of steps and plenty of places to stop to rest or shoot. I'm sure if you take your time you will be fine.

When you get to the bottom there was a bus service to drive you back up to the top to get your car, for a fee of corse. You might want to call them or e-mail them to be sure its still in service. Also in the evening they have a laser light show on the walls of the gorge, but I wasn't too impressed with that part.
I found this link but its not the official one:
http://www.llbean.com/parksearch/parks/html/292lln.htm

If you decide to go, make sure you do some research on the area, its gorgeous and there is plenty to do especially if you like wine. There are hundreds of wineries that offer free sampling around each of the Finger Lakes.
If I can be of any other help, don't hessitate to ask.

Watkins Glen is indeed worth the effort. My wife and I hiked it last summer. It is truly amazing what one creek can do to that much rock.

I'm glad you took shots 158 and 159. The smoothed out rock and pools truly show the weathering.

Also in the area is Corning, NY. The glass center there is excellent as is Market Street downtown. The historic district features numerous glass galleries that feature live hot glass demonstrations.

One poster mentioned Niagara Falls. If you continue downriver on the Canadian side, you'll find Niagara-on-the-Lake. In addition to the globally-known Shaw Festival of theater and there is a horticulture school in town. The whole downtown is alive with flowers in season. The area has many wineries and fruit stands as well. Nice shopping too.

egy in the most beautiful rivertown in America

Nice beautiful pictures...What City/Town is this close to? No doubt it's a great place to take pic's.

Hi Cassandra,

Well, there are a lot of steps, not really "uphill", which personally I find easier.

The place is nice and cool, it was something like 35c (bloody hot!) on the surface, but in the gorge it was really nice and cool.

There are no drinks/food on sale or toilets in the gorge. There is a snack station at one end, I think, we never went right to the end. So bring something with you. However, I suggest going in either the early morning or late evening, as you saw on my photos, the sky is way too hot. Im not sure how to really tackle this. Also, bring a tripod! It was blinding sun on the surface, but down below I was only really able to get 2.8/60 at best. Im kicknig myself now for not taking my tripod. If its dull it will be difficult. Also there are lots of long exposure opportunities with the waterfalls, if thats your cup of tea.

The gorge isnt really that long, we took maybe 2 hours to walk from one end, to the other, then back again. There are lots of trails, but the main one, the gorge trail, is really not that long, and all the elevation is steps.

So, I reckon its only a half day affair, but what I would really love to do, is to go in the morning and the evening.

The heart condition, depending on how serious it is, shouldnt be that much of a problem, there are lots of places to rest, and its cool.

Bring a drink with you.

Oh, and don't forget your camera and tripod :)

I can't wait to see your photo's, especially from you...

Thanks James. Very helpful information! If we go this year -- hubby hasn't finalized anything yet -- the gorge is a must see. I showed him your gallery last night and he was very impressed.

I exercise on a treadmill and hike outdoors when weather permits, so level grades are a breeze, but steep or continuous uphill treks are out of the question. I doubt I could improve on your wonderful images though! :)

I bet you could improve on them - if only you go at a better time of day.

The glen isnt continuous uphill - which I find different to steps. There is hardly any uphill, only small sections to actually get to the gorge trail. The rest is steps, and Im possibly the most unfit person you're ever likley to meet, so if I can do it anyone can. I didnt get out of breath once.

ttfn,
Hi James, enjoyed your pictures and then was amused to look at your galley on Epping forest, which I have also photographed in recently .. as I am also into motorsport I will look out for people with 602s more carefully :-)

Hope you had a good holiday. Love the Ferraris.

Its in the town, actually called Watkin's Glen, New York State. Near Seneca & Itheca.

The whole area is very beautiful. Very hilly, green and lush.

Are you local to Epping Forest? When Im at home, and not at uni, I live close to there.

Im going to Brands Hatch in a couple of weeks time, they're holding the British sports car festival, should be great fun. I saw a guy with a 602 there, and also... oops... forgot her name... she's on this forum... was there... with her 602... she couldnt have been more than 50 metres away from me! We photographed the same race, from the same small infield section of Brands!
Hope you had a good holiday. Love the Ferraris.
The great thing with this digital is that I am still on holiday, all my friends and relatives are seeing these photo's day by day...

Very close, pop up there often, sometimes to the tea hut to chat to bikers (love motorbikes me). See gallery (taken with 4900 the camera 2 times before the 602) in the forest, I was trying to understand compositions better ...

I maybe at Donnington Park where there is the BTCC and Fast show, won the tickets with a photograph would you believe it :-) otherwise am tempted to go to France (Sep 21-22) because I understand Le Mans is holding a classic 24 hour festival where all the classic endurance cars from the different eras will be performing (not sure yet on details)
