September 11

My wife and I were at the OB yesterday (we're expecting) and one of the magazines in the waiting room had a feature they shot back in January of all the babies born after 9/11 whose fathers perished on that day.

It was really sad to read each widow's story. Some are trying their best to go on with their lives. Some can't even make it through a single day.

I think, for me, that one article really brings home the emptiness that the tragedy has left behind in so many hearts across this nation.

Just thought I'd share..

... about megapixels when there are more obvious concerns.

You know, I'm reading threads about the so and so 11 megapixel camera. About "Why Phil this ... Why Phil That." So much whining and speculation.

Ok, it's great to read about what might be released after an official Canon announcement. It's great to want this and want that. Who knows ... maybe some of you were affected and this is your way of coping. I know we keep on keeping on

But doesn't make you feel insignificant when you put things in perspective?

For a moment, lets stop thinking about ourselves. What could we have done to help those affected. How much of that money we all spent on our varacious hobby could we have sacrificed to those in need?

And, I know. Some of you are thinking that with out photography, we wouldn't have documented this historic event. But no amount of megapixels are going to bring back those who suffered the attacks.

How many hours have we spent behind our computers ignoring our loved ones? Look up from behind the viewfinder and reconnect with those you love. Cherish the time you have with them.

How does replacing ads honor those who died ?? Anti-capitalists and socialists are taking advantage of the attacks to once again make freedom and capitalism the bad guy and money evil.

Terrorists attacked America because we are the strongest nation on Earth. We are that way because of freedom and capitalism. Most of the people who died were going about their normal lives, working, making money, spending money - enjoying and exercising their freedom.

We can better honor the dead by bringing those who were associated with the attacks to justice or even better, to there timely death on the battlefield.

These terrorists are cowards using the name of God and religion as an excuse to kill.

God and Religion are the reason they kill, not the excuse . I realize that's nit-picking, but these people to not going around killing for sport or for fun, there is reason behind it. It is a reason that we need to understand better if it going to stop. Just calling them madmen and trying to kill them all will deal with the symptom (and maybe make us fell better), but will do nothing to solve the problem.

It's a symbolic gesture, like flying our flag half-staff.

Who is the anti-capitalists? I don't have the fact, but I imagine CNN decided this on their own.

I don't disagree with your points in what we should do about the terrorists, but how is it a BAD thing what CNN did?

nit-pick noted.

I did NOT call them madmen, did NOT say we should kill them all.
And killing them does not make me "feel" better.

Evil cannot be understood, it can only be destroyed. Evil is Evil.

When the anniversary approached, there were voices being raised that all TV, newspapers, and radio should have no advertisements on 9/11. These voices were coming from the same groups that criticize America and freedom given the chance. I should have been more clear.

CNN is a known outlet for many of these voices.

Just blowing off a little steam I guess.

That looks like a generalisation...

And do the advertisers really want to push their products on a national day of mourning? "we here at ... know that you're all grieving, but please take some time to consider what soap you'll use during your next bathroom break" or "Lost a loved one? We'll be glad to fly you anywhere in the states for 50% off the normal price!"... I don't think that would sit too well with the general public?

It's strange, but in many places of the world, it's not considered proper to work or conduct business during a time of mourning. (nor is it considered proper to approach a widow at a funeral and ask her if she's available on the market again -- that, I realise now, was a mistake)

I'm also worried that voices of revenge once again are strengthened. It's strange that the US didn't bother with Afghanistan while Taliban was busy destroying historical land marks, but happily bombed the hell out of the country just to get to one man (incidentally trained by the CIA?). And now they're using 9/11 as one of the excuses for going after Saddam again. What a brave new world.

It just might be. After twenty three years in the fire service I can tell you just how quickly your whole world could be turned upside down. I am a Captain on a HazMAT truck that was on duty one year ago today. Make sure you never leave the house with out telling your family how much you love them, keep your priorities straight and remember people are important material things are nice but they will mean nothing down the road.

Nothing but a bunch of psychobabble. If someone jumps out of the darkness with a knife and tries to kill you you are you going to ask him about his goals or are you going to fight with everything you have to kill him before he kills you? I feel rage but it is not blind.

I'm going to fight with everything I have a kill him. Period. Then I'm going to look at what the cause was and try and deal with that or I will be fighting off guys with knives for the rest of my life. I don't disagree with anything the U.S. as done in fighting back, my point is there is a deeper problem that must be understood and solved.

Posted in the Sony Talk forum:

All I am trying to say is that 'Terrorism' is an ambiguous (sp?) definition. It is defined by the individuals under attack. True the attacks against the US were acts of 'terrorism'. But, also true at the same time the "accidental' bombings of innocent civilians in Afghanistan is 'terrorism'. All I am intersested in seeing is that people get both sides of the story; not just the North American slanted version seen on TV which will probably have no mention of the fact that just as many civilians were killed in Afghanistan by US and ally bombing than in New York last year.

Sorry, it is pretty stupid to debate in this type of forum. I will leave it at that.
I posted this on my site on September 11, 2001...

Personal Comment...
September 11, 2001

I feel a profound sense of sadness and utter despair for the people
closest to this tragedy, their families, and indeed, all human
beings.

As I contemplate the terrifying result of fear, intolerance, and
mistrust amongst humans, I pray that we, as a species, will learn
and adopt a more compassionate and tolerant way of sharing our
planet; that the lives and innocence lost today will not be in vain.

Peace to all-

Loren

Now that we are on Martin Luther King Jr quotes...

"I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without first having spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent."

Glad to see you would fight. Now, suppose he was in a gang and after you killed him the gang passed the word around that they would get you at your house when you least expect it. That they would kill your wife and children the first chance they got. Would you go after them or call Dr. Laura?
