Does anyone know how the Sigma HSM compares to Pentax SDM with reagrd to reliability and MTF? I am not sure if the HSM uses the same contacts as the SDM or use the screw? I am looking at getting the Sigma 18-125 lens but not sure how well it will work with my K200D.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts or comments about them

I had the 50-135 when it failed I got the siggy 50-150 works pretty much the exact same IMO quick quiet etc And so far has lasted longer than the Pentax :-)

I have seen complaints with the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 HSM not focusing, but I haven't noticed any complaints with the others. It is hard to say if there aren't as many of the Sigma's around, or if they are more reliable. If they did fail would people post about it here? etc.

Hard to say how much better, but I'd point out that Sigma's USA warranty is currently 3 years rather than just one for Pentax.

Sigma is big manufacturer (if not largest of the planet) and make a lot of HSM lenses to other brands. HSM motor itself must be same motor-type than with all sigma's HSM lenses across different mount/brand versions.

HSM motors of sigma lenses may not be very bad, otherwise sigma would be ex lens-manufacturer pretty soon.

Quite another story with Pentax, BTW...We faithful pentaxian buy whatever Pentax offer, no matter how long stuff works ;-D ..Oh, just kidding (or then not).

However, optically (you asked about MTF results) Pentax lenses are rather good, check for example these photozone's reviews:

I bought the Sigma 70-200 HSM and it failed after a few months. I guess if it's made for Pentax it's built to fail.
lol...But sorry about your disaster!

...failed after a few months...that's almost unbelievable. But I guess Sigma's service repaired it pretty well - or?

They are, but let me clarify. Pentax is a small company. There are a lot of Sigma lenses for Pentax mount, but I think there are more Pentax SDM Lenses for K mount than there are HSM Sigma lenses for K mount.

For example, I notice on Amazon (for USA) that the Pentax 50-135mm is the #86 best selling SLR lens for all mounts. The Sigma 50-150mm is not in the best seller list at all. That doesn't mean anything, but the Pentax 16-50 (#71 on the list) and 50-135mm are strong selling lenses.

At least one review for the Sigma 50-150mm on Amazon stated "Would not autofocus". That is only 1 review, but there are only 10. 2 others had issues with front/rear focus. That is 30% of the lens reviewers who had issues. I know this number doesn't mean much as we don't know if only people with problems are leaving reviews, etc. But still, that doesn't sound promising.

I do not know if the HSM in Pentax is the same as in other brands (there are no guarantees that it is, but I imagine they would try to keep it that way to keep costs down).
HSM motors of sigma lenses may not be very bad, otherwise sigma would be ex lens-manufacturer pretty soon.
I still see lots of failures among all lens mounts, but I imagine they are acceptable overall. People will be more tolerant of failures due to the low initial cost and long warranty.

Nikon and Canon buyers do the same. I know my L lens is way better than that Sigma that cost half as much... :) I am not defending Pentax, as I do think there is an issue with SDM. I haven't had any failures yet, but I haven't had SDM lenses that long. Is the issue worse than with Sigma's HSM? Maybe, maybe not.

What was the serial# on that or just the first 3 digits of it? e.g. 102xxxxx

The early Sigma HSM lenses had issues w/ the rollers seizing up. I think they've fixed that now, but there's still a lot of old stock.

Sigma's HSM is a true ring motor while Pentax's SDM is basically a little micromotor that turns the lens. I suspect the micromotor will die first...

The s/n 1025xxx. I have no Idea whether it's old or new stock. I got it in February and used it quite a bit in the first 2 months. I didn't use it for about 6 weeks and when I mounted it no focus. It make a faint click when trying to focus, but did not move. I emailed Sigma for troubleshooting help and never received a reply. Much to my chagrin, it's currently in a box waiting to be dropped off at UPS.

I tried both Pentax 55mm f/1.4 SDM and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM and I found the Sigma to be faster in focusing, but the lens itself backfocused more than I could dial on the Focus configuration.

Sigma HSM uses the same contacts as Pentax SDM. It does not use the screw.

Actually Sigmas has/had their share of problems, and quite recently too(check Google).

Thanks for all the comments. I was hoping the Sigma had a backup in that is would use the screw drive also. According to the info on B&H, it appears the Sigma only has 1 year warranty. Since I have seen many comments about SDM & HSM failures, would it be better to just stick to the slower but reliable screw mount? Or are the combination screw/sdm lens better to use?

Actually the screw drive system is not slower than SDM, but a lot noisier and the lens seems cheaper because of that noise. If you're looking for a decent lens in regard to the IQ and color rendition, I think the pentax originals are hell of a way better than sigmas.

There is no doubt yours probably has 3 years but my EX series Sigma came with 4 years total in the USA when I bought my 10-20mm one year ago its what made the sale on the spot. I thought Sigma lens had 1 year of warranty no place that I looked said EX lens which is Sigmas DA* lens (eg their top drawer lens) come with cards offering extended warranties. When I opened the box at Adrays to test the lens and saw that nice looking card giving another 3 years for a total of 4 years. Moreover having very positive experience with Sigmas service for the most part, just sealed it for me as I knew this was a very safe investment.

Sony and Canon offer one year just as Pentax so Pentax is in line with others. However personally I won't buy a lens that cost over $400 without a premium warranty.

Sigma EX lens come with long warranties. I would consider one of them. I would consider the Tamron 18-250mm or 28-300mm (those are the best for IQ in Tamrons line for Pentax all in one zooms) with 6 years warranty.

Or go for two lens; to be honest for most lens say my Sigma 17-70mm non EX so one year warranty. However being non SDM its not common for it to break for no reason ;)

So IMHO any type of motor look for a long warranty. No motor in the lens, one year is probably fine.
