Summer People, Summer Dreaming

nice pics...very sharp image..most of the shots were at 400mm?
A few candids shot on my vacation at the end of August with the
Fuji S2 and the 80-400VR Nikkor lens. All shot around the Laguna
Beach area.

Comments welcome, and thanks for looking!

Hello Robert,

Another good selection of candids. Nice job of showing the kids
having a good time.

Phat,

Thanks for the reply...actually, none are these are at full extension, though I've shot quite a bit at full extension with good results. The focal lengths for the images are as follows:

118mm (color girl running)
275mm (black and white guy with sunglasses)
282mm (black and white father with son)
325mm (color two girls running)
230mm (color girl running close up)

Hope this helps, and thanks for looking!

Joel,

Thank you very much for looking...I had a chance to glance at your favorites gallery, and you produce very fine work yourself. I especially enjoyed "Say a Prayer" and "Blue Reflections"...seems like you know how to use that G2 quite well.

Thanks again for the reply,

Robert
A fine series Robert. I enoyed looking at them all.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for looking...seems like you have a pretty fair eye for kids yourself, based on what I saw in your pbase gallery. The "Ant Hunting" and sepia image of Rog were highlights of my quick visit, and I hope you'll post more here.

Thanks again,

Robert
Terrifc shots. The first little girl and the father and son are
really great.

Mark,

Really glad you liked the images, and that little girl in the first image was really such a great subject...I'm sorry I couldn't take more images of her, she was such a good "performer".

Regarding out of focus backgrounds, there is no question that an SLR with interchangeable lenses and a bigger CCD will do a much better job of defocusing the background with the right lens, as you figured out. I had a Kodak DC290 and a Canon G1, and I know what you're talking about. I found with the 290 that the only way I could get a reasonable out of focus background was on very sunny days, and getting real close to the subject. Likewise, the G1 did its best with a lot of light and in a macro setting.

I don't know what could be done to clean up a noisy background, outside of post-processing in Photoshop or some other image editor, which is what I did quite a bit of when I had the prosumer cameras. The flip side of the issue you raise is that the prosumer cameras like your Fuji do a nice job with edge to edge sharpness and clarity...the more modern digital SLRs are surprisingly tricky at times regarding sharpness with handheld images.

There's no question that one of the most enjoyable things about moving to a digital SLR is the ability to control depth of field...D30s and older digital SLRs are getting cheaper, and I would encourage you to consider one if your budget allows, as it makes quite a difference.

Thanks again,

Robert
Hi Robert, I love candids of people, something more natural about
people being "unposed" for me.. these are great, what a pretty girl
with great hair in pic 1.

I have to say I do get camera envy with the cleanness of the images
from cameras like the S2, I understand it is partly to do with the
quality of the lense that one can take at large apertures for
example and get clean blurs on the out of focus beackground. I find
with a fuji finepix prosumer that I often get noisy backgrounds at
large apertures .. is there something I could be doing better to
avoid this?
