Whats the difference between a snapshot and ...

In fact, I just pulled off my bookcase a book called "Picture This, The Inside Story and Classic Photo's of UPI Newspictures".
and how many of yours are in it ...do they show the cellulite on celebrities thighs or is that just something you art in?
Sure, I understand where you're coming from, and that comment explains your disdain for anything in the photographic world other than glossy calendar art as is the stock and trade of coffee table books.

It's common with people who have no knowledge of the history of photography or appreciation of the craft in all it's aspects.

The irony is that while you rail against snapshots, grab shots and award winning photojournalism, you post as examples for what you consider to be exceptionally fine work photographs that make the poorest efforts of the tabloids look like high art indeed.

It's interesting how you kind always takes this route.

anything taken with a Nikon.
A snapshot is something taken with any other brand.
;-)

I didnt write the thread for you,
Sorry son, no cigar. When you post in a public forum, you're addressing your thoughts to everyone that reads it.

If you wanna pick and choose, (pause) use e-mail.
I wasnt sure what your threshold was so I 'amped' it up a bit ...clearly you are bulletproof ....suspect you might have dodged a few of those too ;)

so now back to you ...explain ....'bull'

interesting to me too ...first time I ever heard it ....

You know how every ages you might have a clean-up and maybe all those 1962-1979 Playboys and those copies of men's life ...you know the ones with guys sitting around in garters and puffing a pipe ...well I have thrown them all out, but my Life magazines are all in my treasure box, even on top of my Leica Fotografie Internationals.

The only photojournalism I could'nt bring myself to collect was war photography, I am in absolute awe of it and I am known to look at an image for ages ...but I dont think it respectful, dont know if that silly, but a lot of people still live up in the hills around here and only come down for bread and milk ...all vets and I always buy the beers on Anzac day (but still some dont come down).

I have ..

Sabastiao Salgado ...everything (and a print from my favourite 'workers' I got for my birthday)

Airborne by Louis Greenfield, A Dance Biography.

Black & White; the complete series.

and a bit of a stretch but Visions of the Universe, Carl Sagan, Isaac Asimov, Kazuaki Iwasaki.

Have many books, bookcases are all full and books stacked on the floor ...not a single Lord Snowdon or David Hamilton ...not even a David Bailey to be found.

Oh ...I just found a CATmopolitan ...must belong to my snapshooter partner.

Maybe, but he is one of my favorite ranters here. Always entertaining. Never dull.
I'm OK with the occasional rant. Sometimes they can be entertaining.

I was enjoying this thread until exit here and tvnewsbadge decided to make it personal. I am amazed how quickly it went downhill. That took all of the enjoyment out of it for me.

I think tvnewsbadge made it personal. It took the enjoyment out of it for me too. Once you skip over this section of the thread, it gets better again.

A snapshot can be just as good as a photo that you spend alot of time on. It just depends on the subject and the person viewing it.
True dat. There can be an art to taking snapshots. A snapshot, at its essence, is just happening to be there with a camera, as opposed to setting up a situation to take photographs. You are able to snap off some shots.

This does not prevent you from finding composition, it just makes it more challenging.

Some of the most compelling "portraits" do not involve a photographer; those older "Four 4A Dollar" booths captured some great shots of people. Do we denigrate them because of how they were created?

Are flowers less attractive because they "just happened" instead of being shaped by the hand of man?

Then that would qualify as 99% luck ....great when it happens but as you improve shouldnt luck decrease proportionally to skill (excluding of course those days of good fortune)

My luckiest pic (a snapshot) is of a well known Chinese film director exiting his hotel room between takes with his 'personal assistant' in tow ...he looks very sated, while she does not appreciate his hand 'goosing' her behind and gives him 'that' look the instant I pressed the shutter.
While there was luck being in the right place at the right time, was it "luck" that you recognized a great shot and took it? Was it "luck" that it was properly exposed?

Look at it this way: a painter I know claims that "art is a VERB. This painting? It's not art: it's what's left when the art is OVER."

In this scenario, no photographs are art: they are merely EVIDENCE of art. You judge the merit of the artist by the evidence he leaves.

How you get there isn't relevant in the big picture; but having the skills and knowledge make it easier to accomplish.

Thats it ...and the most eloquent explanation I have ever heard. Ive just woken up, not had my coffee yet, bit too much to be dealing with a revelation.

But what a stunning explanation, you are a clever fella.

Its OK, I should have ignored and then I wouldnt have lept out of my cage ...

he did catch me by surprise, I even chat with him, that was the bit that got me, I thought I was amongst friends.

To everyone else I apologise, as you know I like a giggle and as some know I have other things going on.

well thought out art, and recording lives for memorys sake.

Neither are better than the other....one usually appeals to a wider audience than the other.

I like the more well thought out approach. I like going to places many dont even have the time to go...and capturing the essance of a place and sharing it with the world.

Others just want to remember somthing, put it in the family album.

I kinda like that there are both approaches. Snapshots have their place...and have as much meaning as a fully thought out artful shot that I intend to sell.

I have all the family photos dating back to when cameras were invented. I wouldnt trade these for ANYTHING....and they are almost ALL snap shots.

So for you snap shooters out there. Yes...there is a LOT more to photography than just capturing a simple snap shot....but if that's what you bought a camera for...by god...enjoy your snapshots...there is NOTHING wrong with wanting to stay at that level of photography....and you will record your world for those who come after you.

And those who come after you will appreciate it.
