About 3 weeks ago my studio was broken into and cleaned out. Luckily my insurance was quick and fair on the payout. I almost feel like I should thank the theif that stole everything as my new kit is going to be far better than my old one.

Stolen gear:
D700 body
80-200 2.8 push pull
60mm 2.8g
24mm 2.8
A bunch of misc lighting and modifers

New gear purchased:
D700 body
MB-D10 Grip
24-70 2.8g
70-200 2.8g VR
And I bought the same light kit I had before.

Can't wait to play with it all!

Even though I'm sure you lost a bit of work not having equipment I'm glad to hear your insurance paid off. I carry a plan of about $8,000 after I had a few close calls with people and life and it's one of the best things I have for $11 a month.

Those of you who don't have insurance should think about it even if you don't make money off your work. Even more so if you don't make money off your work. The rates of insurance for people using their equipment for leisure are dirt cheap compared to working professionals even if the leisure photographer is more skilled that the working professional. It's all about money to the insurance company. If you're making money they want more.

It didn't help but I had been wishing my d200 to get stolen along with a d70 body and a bag of lenses I didn't use much but no less it didn't work. Had to upgrade on my own but I kept all the insurance on the equipment even if it sits in a drawer at home.

Well yes I loved my daughter when she borrowed my old d70 and drove it over with her 4x4, hehe I upgraded big, but still in the end I payed after deductible and claim that stayed on record for a couple of years.

Were you insured? I had the same thing happen lost a load of awesome stuff and don't know how many years it will take for me to get that kind of gear again.

What kind of bastids breaks into a house and steals things? I hope they all get the privilege of loosing their own treasured possessions... not to mention their freedom.

It's good to see you are recovering well and getting better gear than you had before.

...cause if they do, they now know about all the good stuff you have and will probably come back, give you your old stuff back and take all the new stuff....lol

A common pattern is for the crooks to break in and steal, then wait a while and come back for the new stuff too.

Congrats on your new stuff, but be careful.

I had a major claim last year as well. Even though it happened off site I went out and purchased a safe that weighs enough that it requires 2 people to lift. Even if a thief manages to get it unbolted it would be very difficult to remove. It holds more gear than the amount of my claim which was close to $12k. I consider it $300 well spent. It's not totally theft proof but it would take an awful lot more time and strength than picking up a camera pack from the shelf.

I just switched to Hill and Usher (hartford) after my previous Ins. co. changed he rules and would cover on location or in studio, but not in transit. I could have added that but after 20 years of paying the same company and no claims it ticked me off to get that notice.
