You're a part of our family here! We've all missed you and I hope you had a great fun summer. Did you get to hang out with the grandkids in CA? I know you had some lovely stops along your way out west this year. You should have some awesome new archive shots to share now. Plus time to put the thinking cap back on for the comp gallery. YEah! Good to see you back safe and sound.

thanks for the family welcome back. I missed you all an awful lot

actually the trip to California was a trial return home to California. As much as I love Dandridge TN and our friends, our children and grand children and great grand children are all in California so we are still here and will stay. our furniture is in storage as we look for a place to live.

it is a very hard thing to leave the beautiful people I learned to love in Dandridge but my children have made the move worthwhile. we have had several bD parties and Halloween was a hoot and thanksgiving will really by beautiful

so my wonderful cabin is sold. hard to go back now

the three cats have joined the the other three ranch cats and two house cats so that makes seven cats on seven acres one acre for each of them, oh not really there are quite a few horses to claim these acres
It rained all day today so the cats are hold-up in the the trailer with us.

it sounds like a very (ahem) moving experience. I have no doubt that you will absolutely love being being so close to your family. All generations together, how marvelous!
Now we'll get to know your new digs through your new photos. :D

On a fine set of pictures in the last challenge, and on a cracking theme choice.
Thanks Alistair.
We've had a bit of a week this week as Julie's father sadly passed away. We had the funeral today which was a comfort I think to her, and certainly was nice to meet a lot of old friends and relations from the past and present.
I am sorry to hear of Julie's loss (and your family's). Some how it makes us feel a bit stranded when our parent's are gone. It think we all grieve so differently, sometimes it is hard to find the best way to support our spouse. My thoughts and prayers are certainly with you and your family.

Wow! That is a big one! I am so happy that you are welcomed back to CA in such a great way. The hardest thing in life is change - and somehow the only constant.

Welcome back to Oly land!

a few comments in the the exhibition, and an image in the competition. I hope to get back in the swing of commenting again, after being a real slacker :(.

There are some really great photos already. It will be fun to watch this challenge develop :).

This may be a silly question, but why does putting your name after the title of your photo make it easier for voting? I would have thought that the photo should speak for itself.

Great theme by the way!

My fault. It is worded improperly. It should read something to the effect of "makes it easier to see placings when the voting results are posted". As part of the results (for example: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=33598974 ) the number of votes, the title and the name of the person is posted.

You are correct the photo should speak for itself.
Great theme by the way!
If you have not posted any pictures yet - hope you do!

We are much more friendly here than most (IMO) so the reason we like our names posted on our photos is so after the voting we know who to congratulate right away for one thing. We all know each other by name around here and as you'll see, we try to treat each other like familiy on a 'first name' basis. :o)

If you want to join the challenges you will soon see the critique is gentle, never ever mean spirited. For me personally, the suggestions (as I prefer to call them) are almost always very helpful and great! Also, the fun here is really in the competition gallery, where you often try to photograph things that are out of your comfort zone or out of your normal subject matter, which broadens your horizons.

I think you will find the best part of all is the way we all actually look deeply at each others photos and really learn from it. We have learned to really respect each other and treat each other accordingly, so maybe more than anything, having your name on your photos is more personable. After all, we do this for fun, there are no prizes other than the joy of each other's company and the great learning gains we get from each other over time.

Sheesh, I do go on but, its really hard to explain to new people the benifits and rewards of just having these guys & gals here to learn from and admire!

Give it a try for maybe 3 or 4 challenges and see if you don't get hooked. :o) Now, ugggg what was your name? hehehe

I'm so sorry for Julie's and your loss. It's difficult to face, regardless of circumstances. Still, this is not a total separation. Parents have their own ways of remaining in our lives. Both of mine are gone, but I still keep them safe in my heart and carry them with me wherever I am. There are times when I'm confronting a challenge and need some advice, and the only person I trust to give me an honest answer is either my Mom or my Dad. So I ask myself, what would they tell me to do? And it's odd, but I can often sense a response. Maybe it's just coming from within, but even so, that in itself is reassuring. Maybe, on the other hand, our loved ones still continue to touch us and look out for us. Either way, they're absent only in a physical sense. After the grieving and the pain, I hope you and Julie will discover this and be comforted by it.

B&W hasn't been my "thing" because I've never felt as if I'm very good at it, so this is the perfect theme for me to learn and practice. Love it!! I got really excited about starting the exploration process and have entered the results so far. Might change, might not.

It's interesting to note how widely our techniques vary when it comes to using a monochromatic approach. I suppose some of this has to do with the programs we're using but I think the artist's eye provides a unique perspective, especially without the distraction of colour to add a significant variable. The images look cleaner, somehow ... stripped to essentials. Hard for me to explain how I feel. But I'm looking forward to seeing the galleries fill with great shots.

I've never been totally crazy about my results. I do see other's shots that I just want mine to look like! I've been looking on Youtube for some good tutorials but so far having found one like the shots I like. I think they might be HDR shots turned into b&ws OR maybe I'm just not getting a great shot to start with? I don't know for sure.

I've been entering the open challenges on this website and really getting bad results. I'm thinking maybe I actually got a first place once but it was on such a silly theme (take a photo of a news reporter on your t.v.) that it had nothing to do with taking a good picture, it had everything to do with having a really good t.v. LOL at least that is what I think.

I get a bit disappointed and then I remember, there are no prizes only experience like on this challenge. So I keep plugging away at those challenges too. HA!
