CP4500, I wish to see any full color landscapes?

Olga,

did you really try to print 11x14 from 4500 images? Any landscape
prints? That's what I am interested in... and need to decide if I
want to buy this camera or not. Do you just sharpen them in
Photoshop before printing? How do you bring up the detail (that is
in the shadows)? I tried playing with you images, and couldn't get
anything decent looking, but I am not a pro at that. It just seems
a little out of focus... maybe the 'infinity' focus on the lens is
not really 'infinity', but more like 10-20 feet?
I work with them in Photoshop for brightness, lightness, sharpness etc. And then I print using QImage. And yes, I've been printing 11x14s. QImage gave me decent 8x10's from my 2MP photos and very good 11x14's from my 4MP photos. I can't for the life of me print a decent shot straight out of Photoshop or any other program while QImage is a no brainer to me.

Keep in mind that what I've posted on the web site are out of camera shots, some taken from a moving car. I do a lot of TIFFs when I know I may want to print 11x14's.

My latest trick (and I'm still trying to figure out how to get best results) for bringing out the details has been helped by:

http://www.fredmiranda.com/DRI/index.html

I make a copy of a shot I have and level it for the dark places of the photo. Then another copy is leveled for the light colors. Then I combine.

This action would probably work better and I'm thinking of getting it:

Here's a complimentary link to the one Olga just posted.

It looks like a great way to optimize dynamic although I've
yet to try it personally.

Dmitriy: You're right of course. My photo was on Pbase and the original image is there to view, but for pasting into this thread, I only chose "Large" so that someone opening the window wouldn't have to wait for a 3+ Meg file to open. Only someone navigating back to the original site would see the original file :) But some here are making decisions based on what they view in the embedded images.

My friend has a Fuji camera that does that image interpolation 2Mb
= 4mp image, and that's what 4500 images remind me of the most.
Looking at the "original" pic at the Pbase is about the same as
downloading "medium" and zooming it 200% in Photoshop.

Any thoughts on this?
There's clearly a difference between what you see posted and what
really exists. The 3.4 meg file I posted looks a HECK of a lot
better on my monitor in the original state than the 150 kb photo
you see here.

If you want to print, shouldn't you be using some huge files? And
then again you might have to apply unsharp mask in photoshop. I
have a cp4500 and I am confident that if I did want to print a 8x10
using one of the landscape pictures I have taken at max res. and
max quality that it would be quite sharp.

warren.
I was also looking into getting a 4500 for almost 2 months now....
still can't decide. Unfortunetely, these images is what I was
afraid of... this camera does a pretty bad job with landscapes. I
am not a pro photographer.... but landscape shots look extremely
blurred. Yes, the camera is perfect for macro shots... but
occasional landscape shots is also something I'd like to be able to
print out. The blurred images I've seen posted (from 8 posts
below) look blured when printed 8x10. Detail is just not there.
All leaves are blurred into one green mess, no defined edges...

Those who have the camera, what's your HONEST opinion of the
landscape performance? It seems that the little Canon S40 does a
better job, but I could be wrong there. 5700 is definetely better,
but that's almost 2x the price difference.

People, please share you opinion of the landscape performance of
this camera, and how does it compare to, say, S40?

Chris: I almost agree with you 100%. It is a matter of "expectations." Personally, I believe that the only way to shoot landscapes is with my trust old 8" x 10" Deerdorf. Unfortunately, I gave that up many, many years ago, but there's no better way to shoot a landscape. I remember in those days "stepping down" when I felt lazy, to my 4" x 5" Horseman.

That being said, I'm really, REALLY curious about this Sinar 22 MP back for medium format cameras. How well will THAT thing do? lol.

When responding to questions like the one originally posted, there's a tendency to forget to somehow frame the response with a perspective or qualifier (i.e., "The 4500 takes very good landscapes...for a digital camera, that is."). I don't think anyone here though, was implying that this was the be all/end all landscape camera.

You are absolutely right about what "most people" see. To the untrained eye, blemishes, "noise" "artifacts" and all the other stuff we discuss, are invisible.

I think the key is, when responding, qualify your answer or at least frame it from in the perspective from which you're responding as you did with your post.

I own a 4500 and luv it to bits but in all honesty if you want
detailed landscape shots then you gotta go to medium format. The
4500 is at it's best in the middle range, close-up and macro... Is
there any middle priced dc's that can take detailed landscape
shots? I don't think so... however, I do take landscape shots with
the 4500 and friends and family never complain about 'em. I'ts only
us guys who see all the problems. Nikon deserve a pat on the back
for the 4500 and 5700 as it's got me back to taking pics again,
which is all that counts in the end :-)

Hi,
I am thinking about buying the CP4500 and I have been looking at
all the posts about it. I would like to see some full color
landscape images and wondered if someone can point me in the right
direction.
I have been lurking on this site for some time and think it is
excellent.
Thanks,
Neil Hicks.
Here are a few unretouched photos taken with a 4500:

Olga,

No offence. I would suggest that you should be more focused. Here's a link to a Michael Johnson write-up.

Chris, i saw the pic ' a peep through the arch' and was impressed with the sharpness of the 4500. I own one too. I was wondering whether did you set the sharpness adjustment to the maximum. What is the settings did you adjust?

Thanks

Hi Keith... I always use Aperture priority mode for d.o.f... and with landscapes set focus to infinity... the rest are on normal. I do use usm in PS6 and tweak it according to the image... I looked at the original and it was quite good straight out the camera (after a resize that is)... the original at 72dpi is not sharp of course... I believe in doing to my digital images what I did to my b/w film images in the past... however, I wouldn't put up a misleading pic, and the archway had only a small amount of usm added which I think is quite fair...

Now on macro shots where I control the lighting( 2 cheap table lamps), I up the sharpness and the contrast on the camera and use a fair bit of usm to get them as sharp as possible like this...

Thanks for all your comments on the CP 4500 and it's landscape abilities, I have not yet made up my mind on whether the 4500 is for me, it's a big ask for any camera to be the best at everything. I like the look of the G2 and cp5000 landscapes but I like the size and many features of the CP4500.
thanks,
Neil Hicks.
