Hi all,

I am a photojournalism student and I am currently in my senior year of school. I just have a few professional questions and any help would be great.

I have been lucky enough as a student to freelance for local newspapers, corporate clients and magazines. Currently I own the 1D Mark III, 16-35 f/2.8LII, and 70-200 f/2.8L. This is definitely expensive gear for someone in college, but I have been able to afford it.

I have been thinking about either buying the 5D Mark II (to go along with my current equipment) or buying the 1D Mark IV (and selling my 1DM3).

Or should I just scrape the whole idea and buy another lens or two?

What do you guys think? Any help would be great.

I only have three grand in my bank account (assuming I'll get 2500 for my 1DM3, I can add that to the 3,000 I have now for the IV).

Thanks a ton.

Kevin

as a PJ... two (2) cams is a MUST!

one for LONG lens + for WIDE... and a FULL FRAME is very ideal...

as a PJ we DO NOT have time to change lenses...

1d mk III + 5d (FF) will be excellent (or if you can afford 5d mk II the BETTER)...

then... in the future if you want to upgrade the 1d mk III to mk IV, that's very nice!!

your lenses will cover all your shots already... NO NEED to buy a lens!

i always bring 1d mk III (with 70-200) + 5d (with 17-40)... PJ work or any other work...

:)

To cover a venue, news or otherwise, TWO camera bodies is a must, as there is no time to change lenses, plus the back-up coverage in case one of the camera bodies fail.

You wisely bought two excellent lenses, assuming that the 70-200 f2.8L has IS, which is also a must.

The 1D4 will likely be a good camera, however, the 5D2 will give you the 2nd camera, for $2500 and you can save for the 1D4 purchase a year or so, from now, and sell the 1D3 at that time.

We would not recommend selling the 1D3, replacing for the 1D4 with the result of having only one camera body.

If you must have the 1D4, then you could get the 7D which we tested thoroughly and love it... you can go to our site and see some Disney test images using the 7D exclusively.

You really need two camera bodies; not only for eliminating lens changing, but for the "back-up" issue, in case one fails, you can still cover the game, event, or news story.

We will likely go for the 1D4 after June of 2010, once the camera has had 6 months of deliveries, and reactions;

With the release of he 1D3, we were on board with it ASAP, and had 18 months of headaches with service and repair issues.

I think the key word is "professional." Although the 5D Mark II is the bargain of the century, I'd think you'd want something with pro build quality and weather sealing. Not to mention pro AF and tracking (assuming you will be shooting moving subjects in PJ) and high frame rates so you won't miss that instant that really reveals. Your 1D3 is excellent. Perhaps you could get a 2nd one of those. Or, I'd be tempted to just save up and spring for the 1D4 while keeping your 1D3 as a 2nd body. The 1D4 with its improved resolution, ISO and now, full HD video, should have all your PJ needs covered for years.

I would get a std zoom lens and a flash....
either the 24-70 or 24-105 then you will have your complete set of lenses...

If you have the 1D III you will hate shooting with the 5D II, this is a down grade in camera... The 1D IV will be a much better camera over all... don't fall into the FF trap, this camera will prove that wrong... or wait for the next new FF to come out next year, that has the updated AF and meetering...

Wait for the test of the 1D IV before you buy any camera, but it will be better than the 5D II.....

I'd get a used 1DsII for a second body, costs the same as 5DII but much better build, AF, more responsive.

I had a 1DIII and 5DII for a while, but sold the 5DII because it's simply not what I need: too slow for action, not rugged enough for travel/outdoors etc.

I really wanted a compact but rugged body for travel, so I bought a Pentax K7 with a few of their weathersealed lenses. Good enough IQ for me, and no headaches. If it wasn't for the need for a light weight body, AND if I had to deliver professionally, I'd have gotten a second 1 series body, no two ways...

two cams are a great advantage, Personally I'd wait till you have enough for the 1Dmk4 and the mk3. While the 5D2 could do some shots It's more apt to miss the paying shot in the higher speed world...

5d II will be more than good enough for when you need those wide angle shots.

Not that sure why you would want to get the 1d4 now unless you have enough business that affording it is not a problem.

Improved functionality and image quality is not reward enough? :-)
